RICHMOND, Ky. – The Ohio softball team (6-10) wrapped up play at the 2023 EKU Colonel Classic Sunday morning (March 5), defeating Indiana State (6-7), 6-1, helping the Bobcats finish the weekend 3-1.
Overall, Ohio scored six runs on six hits and committed one error, while Indiana State scored one run on four hits and committed one error.
Individually, junior
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) went 2-for-3, while sophomore
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) went 1-for-2 with a homerun, walk, two runs scored and three RBI. Junior
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) added a hit, walk and a run scored, while senior
Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) registered a hit, walk and an RBI. Junior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) drew a walk and scored a run, while sophomore
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) had a base hit for the Bobcats. Freshman
Austy Miller (Bradford, Pa.) and sophomore
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) both scored runs for the Bobcats, while freshman
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) added an RBI.
In the circle, graduate student
Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) got the start, pitching seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out five in the complete game victory.
Ohio threatened to get on the board in the top of the first inning when with two outs, Paoli and Dawe both drew walks. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the frame still scoreless. After Indiana State went down in order in the bottom of the first, Ohio threatened again in the top of the second when Keidel was hit by a pitch and O'Brien reached on a single. However, Ohio was unable to push a run across, keeping the game scoreless.
Ohio struck in the top of the third inning After Logan drew a walk, Paoli reached on a single through the right side, advancing Logan to third. Logan scored minutes later when Dawe singled to left, putting Ohio up 1-0. Ohio added on when Paoli scored on sacrifice fly from Westler, putting Ohio up 2-0.
The Bobcats were not done in the inning. After Miller reached after being hit by a pitch, Keidel cleared the bases with a three-run homerun down the left field line, putting the Bobcats up 5-0 going into the bottom of the third. Indiana State threatened to get a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting two runners on. However, the Ohio defense held strong, keeping the Bobcats' lead 5-0 going into the fifth.
Indiana State threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning, getting two runners on with two outs. However, once again the Ohio defense was able to get the final runner of the inning out on a fielder's choice, keeping the game 5-0 after five full frames.
Ohio added on in the top of the sixth inning when Keidel scored on a throwing error after O'Brien reached on a bunt single, giving Ohio a 6-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth. Indiana State got a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one run on one hit and one error to cut the Ohio lead to 6-1 going into the seventh inning.
After Ohio went down in order in the top of the seventh, Indiana State came to bat for the final time, with the Ohio defense sending them down in order, securing the 6-1 victory.
Up next, the Bobcats head to Huntington, W. Va. on Wednesday, March 8 to take on Marshall. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
