BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Ohio softball team (3-7) opened play at the 2023 Camel Stampede hosted by Campbell on Friday (Feb. 24). Ohio opened the day by defeating Rider (0-2), 3-0, before finishing the afternoon by falling to Wagner (2-2), 5-2.
GAME ONE: Ohio 3, Rider 0
Overall, Ohio scored three runs on six hits and committed one error, while Rider was held scoreless on six hits and one error.
Individually, freshman
Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, while junior
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) added a triple and an RBI. Sophomore
Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) recorded one double, while senior
Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) registered a hit and an RBI. Freshman
Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) added one base hit, while junior
Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) drew two walks and scored two runs and sophomore
CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) scored one run.
In the circle, redshirt freshman
Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) recorded her first career complete game shutout, pitching seven innings, while allowing no runs on six hits, walking four and striking out four.
The Bobcats got on the board early in the top of the first inning. With one out, Logan drew a walk and then stole second, setting up an RBI triple from Paoli to give Ohio an early 1-0 lead. After Ohio sent Rider down in order in the bottom of the first, Ohio tried to add on in the top of the second when sophomore
Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, Pa.) drew a walk and then moved to third on a double from Hoffner. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, ending the frame with a 1-0 lead.
After Rider stranded a runner in the bottom of the second, Ohio added on in the top of the third. After Logan drew her second walk of the game, she scored on an RBI single from Dawe, putting the Bobcats up 2-0 after three innings.
After the Ohio defense forced Rider to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Ohio once again looked to add to its lead. However, after a scoreless fourth and fifth innings from the Ohio offense, the Bobcats added on in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Keidel reached on a fielding error and moments later, Westler roped an RBI double to left, scoring Keidel, putting the Bobcats up 3-0 after the top of the sixth. Rider threatened in the bottom of the frame, getting runners on with two walks, but the Ohio defense held firm, sending the game to the seventh with Ohio leading 3-0.
Ohio threatened to add on in the top of the seventh inning with a leadoff single from Hummel, however Ohio was unable to add on, sending the game to the final frame with Ohio leading, 3-0.
Rider threatened to rally in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, the Rider batter drew a walk. The next batter singled through the right side; however, Keidel was able to throw out the lead runner attempting to advance to third, securing the 3-0 victory.
GAME TWO: Wagner 5, Ohio 2
Individually, Ohio scored two runs on nine hits and had three errors, while Wagner scored five runs on nine hits and committed one error.
Individually, Hummel went 2-for-4, while Hoffner went 2-for-3. Logan added one hit and one RBI, while freshman
Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio) recorded one double for the Bobcats. Westler added one hit, one walk and scored two runs, while sophomore
Reagan Farmer (Baltimore, Ohio) and junior
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) both had hits for the Bobcats.
In the circle, graduate student
Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched seven innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on nine hits, while walking two and striking out seven.
After the Bobcats held Wagner off the board in the top of the first inning, Ohio threatened in the bottom of the first. After Hummel reached on a leadoff single, Logan reached on a fielder's choice. However, the Ohio offense was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the second with it still scoreless.
After a scoreless second inning, Wagner got on the board in the top of the third, scoring three runs on four hits, one error, while leaving the bases loaded, putting them up. 3-0 going into the bottom of the third. The Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Westler led off with a single to right. She then moved to second on a base hit from Hoffner before scoring on an RBI single from Logan, cutting the Ohio deficit to 3-1 after three innings.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings from both teams, Wagner added on in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on two hits and two errors, taking a 5-1 lead. Ohio attempted to rally in the bottom of the frame when Westler scored on a ground out from Logan, however that was as close as the Bobcats could get, falling 5-2.

Ohio returns to action for the final day of the Camel Stampede on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they take on host Campbell at 2 p.m., before closing the day against No. 14 Duke.
