Ohio Softball Wraps Up Day Two at Tiger Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. –  The Ohio softball team (2-5) returned to action on Saturday (Feb. 18) at the 2023 Tiger Classic hosted by LSU. Ohio fell in the first game of the day, 5-4, against Central Arkansas (7-0), before falling to Utah (6-2), 9-1 in five innings in the second game.
 
GAME ONE: Central Arkansas 5, Ohio 4
Overall, Ohio scored four runs on six hits and committed one error, while Central Arkansas scored five runs on six hits. 
 
Individually, freshman Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with two hits, drew a walk and scored a run, while freshman Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) had one double and one run scored. Sophomore CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) recorded a triple, a walk and a run scored, while junior Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) added a hit, RBI and run scored. Junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) recorded an RBI, as did freshman Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio).
 
In the circle, sophomore Ellie Greene (Attica, Mich.) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, and walked three, while graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walked one and struck out three. 
 
Central Arkansas got on the board first in the top of the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead. After a scoreless bottom of the frame by the Bobcats, UCA added on in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs on two hits and an Ohio fielding error, increasing their lead to 3-0 headed into the bottom of the second inning. The Bobcats were able to get two baserunners on in the bottom of the frame, when Keidel walked and Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) was hit by a pitch, however Ohio was unable to capitalize, ending the frame with Ohio trailing 3-0. 
 
After Ohio held Central Arkansas off the board in the third and fourth innings, the Bobcats got their first hit of the day in the bottom of the fourth when senior Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) singled to center and then stole second, putting a runner in scoring position with two outs. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the fifth trailing 3-0. 
 
Central Arkansas added on in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on one hit to take a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Ohio threatened cut into the UCA lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, when with two outs Westler doubled to center and then advanced to third on a single to short from Hummel. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the sixth still trailing, 5-0. 
 
After a scoreless sixth, the Bobcats threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning when Keidel led off with a triple to right center. The Bobcats finally got on the board moments later when Grein singled to right, scoring Keidel and cutting the Ohio deficit to 5-1 with no outs. After senior Kaci Branch (Villa Park, California) reached after being hit by a pitch, Westler reached on a fielder's choice, before Hummel singled to short to score Grein, cutting the UCA lead to 5-2 with one out. 
 
After Logan drew a walk, Paoli drew one of her own, scoring Westler from third and cutting the Ohio deficit to two, still with only one out. After Hummel scored on a fielder's choice from Miller to cut the UCA lead to one, Ohio was unable to take advantage, ultimately falling 5-4. 
 
GAME TWO: Utah 9, Ohio 1 (5)
Overall, Ohio scored one run on four hits and had three errors, while Utah scored nine runs on seven hits and committed three errors. 
 
Individually, Hummel had one hit and scored on run, while Dawe, Keidel and Branch all registered hits. 
 
In the circle, redshirt freshman Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) got the start, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out one. Freshman Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) pitched 1.0 innings, allowing one run. 
 
Ohio opened the second game of the day with the first hit when Hummel singled up the middle to start the game. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the second inning tied at 0-0. The Bobcats threatened again in the top of the second inning when Dawe led off with a single.  Then with two outs, Branch singled to right, but the Bobcats were unable to get a run across, sending the game to the bottom of the frame still tied at 0-0. 
 
After Ohio kept the game scoreless through the top of the fourth inning, Utah's offense came alive in the bottom of the frame, scoring nine runs on five hits, with the Bobcats committing three errors, putting Utah up 9-0 after four innings. 
 
Ohio was able to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning. After Hummel reached on an error and junior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was hit by a pitch, Hummel was able to score on a ground out, cutting the Utah lead to 9-1. However, Ohio was unable to cut into the lead anymore, sealing the Utah 9-1 five inning win
