Ohio Softball Wraps Up Day One of Tiger Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Ohio softball team (2-3) returned to action Friday afternoon (Feb. 17) for day one of the 2023 Tiger Classic hosted by No. 18 LSU. Ohio opened the day falling to Central Arkansas (6-0), 2-0, before returning to action Friday evening, falling to No. 18 LSU (6-0), 8-0 in five innings. 
 
GAME ONE: Central Arkansas 2, Ohio 0
Overall, Ohio did not score on five hits and committing five errors, while Central Arkansas scored two runs on three hits and did not commit any errors. 
 
Individually, junior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded two hits for the Bobcats, as did freshman Austy Miller (Bradford, Ohio). Freshman Shelby Westler (Marion, Ohio) added one base hit for the Bobcats. 
 
In the circle, redshirt freshman Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit, while walking three and striking out five. Graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched 2.2 innings and did not allow a run on two hits, while striking out three. 
 
Central Arkansas got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring on a throwing error, putting them up 1-0 after one full inning of play. After an uneventful second inning, Ohio got a runner on the bases when Austy Miller reached on a single through the right side, however, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the third with Central Arkansas still up 1-0. 
 
After a scoreless bottom of the third and top of the fourth, Central Arkansas added on in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning. Ohio attempted to get on the board in the top of the fifth inning, with Austy Miller and Westler reaching on back-to-back singles to left field. However, the Bobcats offense was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the frame still trailing 2-0. 
 
Ohio once again threatened in the top of the sixth inning when Logan singled. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize. Ohio then entered the top of the seventh down two hoping to rally, however the Bobcats offense was unable to do so, falling 2-0. 
 
GAME TWO: No. 18 LSU 8, Ohio 0
Overall, Ohio finished the game with no ones, three hits and committed two errors, while LSU scored eight runs on 12 hits and committed one error. 
 
Individually, Logan, Austy Miller and sophomore CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) all recorded hits for the Bobcats, while freshman Belle Hummel (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) and junior Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) all drew walks. 

In the circle, Coffelt pitched four innings, allowing eight runs on five hits, walked three and struck out two, while freshman Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) pitched 0.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and walked one. 
 
Ohio got runners on the base in the top of the second inning when senior Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) reached on a throwing error. Moments later, Hoffner walked and both runners reached on a wild pitch, putting runners on second and third. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the frame tied at 0-0. 
 
LSU got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs on three hits while leaving the bases loaded, sending the game to the third with the Bobcats trailing 2-0. After a scoreless top of the third for Ohio, LSU added on a run in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-0 lead after three. 
 
Ohio threatened to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning when with one out, Austy Miller reached on a single to right and then moved to second after Keidel singled to right. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the bottom of the inning trailing 3-0. The Tigers added on in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits, increasing their lead to 5-0 after four. After Ohio was unable to generate any offense in the top of the fifth, LSU scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the innings to secure the 8-0 victory. 
 
UP NEXT
Ohio returns to action for day two at the 2023 Tiger Classic on Saturday, Feb. 18. Ohio opens the day against Central Arkansas at 12 p.m. ET, before wrapping up the day at 2:30 p.m. ET against Utah.
