OXFORD, Ohio – The second-seeded Ohio softball team (23-24) opened play at the 2022 Mid-American Conference Tournament, falling to No. 3 Central Michigan (27-24), 7-1, Thursday afternoon at the Miami Softball Field.
Overall, Ohio scored one run on four hits and committed one error, while CMU scored seven runs on 11 hits and committed one error.
Individually, graduate students
Tori Walker (Plain City, Ohio) and
Megan McMenemy (Westerville, Ohio) led the Bobcats with one hit each, while senior
Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) had a hit, RBI and drew a walk. Meanwhile, fifth year
Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.)added a hit and fifth year
Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) and sophomore
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) both drew walks for the Bobcats.
CMU got the first hit of the game on a one-out single. However, the Ohio defense was able to hold CMU off the board, sending the game to the bottom of the first with the game still scoreless. The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the inning to get a baserunner of their own when Englant drew a leadoff walk. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the second still scoreless.
Central Michigan took the lead in the top of the second inning, scoring one run on two hits to take an early 1-0 lead going to the bottom of the frame. Ohio got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the second on a two-out single from Walker. After she stole second to put a runner in scoring position for the second-straight inning, Ohio was unable to score, keeping it a 1-0 CMU lead going to the third inning.
Central Michigan added on in the top of the third inning, scoring four runs with the help of a bases loaded double to take a 5-0 lead going to the bottom of the frame. CMU added one more run in the top of the fourth, increasing their lead to 6-0 moving to the bottom of the inning. Ohio was able to get a baserunner on in the bottom of the fourth when Spacek drew a two-out walk. However, Ohio was unable to score, sending the game to the fifth still down by six.
The Bobcats were able to get another baserunner on in the bottom of the fifth, with Rice drawing a walk. However, the CMU defense made back-to-back great plays in the outfield to end the Ohio threat, sending the game to the sixth with Ohio still trailing, 6-0.
Ohio got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. After McMenemy led the inning off with a single down the left field line, she moved to second with Paoli drew a walk. After sophomore
Tori O'Brien (Mason, Ohio) entered to run for McMenemy, she would score on an RBI single from Spacek, cutting the CMU lead to 6-1 going to the seventh inning.
The Bobcats threatened to rally in the bottom of the seven inning. With one out, junior
Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) reached second on an error. After sophomore
Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) entered to run for her, Englant reached on an infield hit. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize, falling by the final of 7-1.
In the circle, senior
Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) got the start, pitching three innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits. She did not record a walk or a strike out. Senior
Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) entered the game in the fourth inning, pitching four innings, allowing one run on three hits and walked one batter.
Up next, the Bobcats will take on No. 4 Bowling Green on Friday, May 13. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
