ATHENS, Ga.– The Ohio Softball team (3-8) returned to action on Friday (March 4) during day one of the Bulldog Classic. The Bobcats fell short in both of their day one games, against Appalachian State (8-6), 5-4, and No. 16 Georgia (15-2), 6-2.

GAME ONE: Appalachian State 5, Ohio 4
Overall, Ohio drove in four runs on nine hits and did not commit an error, while Appalachian State recorded five runs on 13 hits and committed two errors.

Individually, senior Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while fifth year Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) went 2-for-4 and registering a double. Freshman CiCi Keidel (Hilliard, Ohio) went 1-for-2 with a homerun and two RBI. Rounding out the Bobcats offensive leaders is fifth year Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) who went 1-for-2 and recorded an RBI.

Appalachian State got on the board first in the top of first inning, scoring three runs on two hits to take an early 3-0 lead. The Bobcats would answer in the bottom of the frame, registering the team's first base runner when Englant reached after she was hit by a pitch with no outs. On the next play, Englant stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error to put the Bobcats in scoring position.

Spacek then singled up the middle, reaching base and scoring Englant to put Ohio on the board. However, the Bobcats were unable to get Spacek home, sending the game to the second with the Bobcats trailing 3-1.

Appalachian State added to their lead in the top of the second inning, scoring a run on three hits to take a 4-1 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.

The Bobcats went back to work, after junior Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) and freshman Lauren Yuhas (West Mifflin, PA) drew walks and Keidel reached after being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly by Englant advanced Troutman home to bring the Bobcats within two runs going into the top of the third.

App State quickly responded after a homerun to left center pushed them ahead by a score of 5-2 going into the bottom of the third inning.

After two and a half innings of very little action, the Bobcats threatened to add on in the bottom of the sixth after Keidel sent a two-run home run through left center field, bring Ohio within one run of tying the game. However, the Bobcats were unable to push the run across, falling by the final of 5-4.

In the circle, senior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) pitched two innings and allowed four runs on five hits before senior Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) came in as relief. Coffelt pitched five innings, allowed one run on eight hits and struck out three batters in the loss.

GAME TWO:  No. 16 Georgia 6, Ohio 2
Overall, Ohio scored two runs on five hits and did not commit an error, while Georgia recorded six runs on nine hits and only committed one error.

Individually, The Bobcats were lead offensively by Yuhas who went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. With Rice closely behind as she went 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Englant went 1-for-4 and registered a double.

After a scoreless inning from Ohio in the top of the first, Georgia jumped out to an early lead in the next frame. The Bulldogs reached and eventually loaded the bases on two walks and a wild pitch. Another walk from Kohl advanced a Georgia runner home, allowing the Bulldogs to take a 1-0 lead with two outs.

A single to right field brought in two additional runs for Georgia, extending their lead to 3-0 heading to the top of the second.

On a 2-2 pitch count, Rice homered to left field, giving the Bobcats their first run of the game and cutting Georgia's lead to two runs. Ohio left a runner stranded, unable to add on sending the game to the bottom of the second.

After a scoreless inning from starting pitcher, Kohl and the Bobcat defense, the Bobcats threatened once again in the top of the third when Yuhas sent a home run over left center field. Ohio saw two runners reach base, but were unable to get them home, sending the game to the bottom of the third with the Bobcats trailing 3-2.

After little action in the next inning, Georgia added to their lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 6-2 lead.

The Ohio defense held strong, keeping Georgia from finding home for the remainder of the game, but was unable to overcome the Bulldogs early lead. Overall, the Bobcats left six runners on base through seven innings.
