LOUISVILLE, KY – The Ohio softball team (5-12) returned to action Friday (March 11) at the Bluegrass Classic. The Bobcats fell short in its first game of the day against Indiana (11-4), 7-5. The second scheduled game against Louisville was canceled in the third inning due to snow and will not be made up.
Overall, the Bobcats scored five runs on nine hits and committed two errors while the Hoosiers scored seven runs on 11 hits with only one error.
Fifth year
Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) went 2-for-4 and recorded two RBI and sophomore
Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, PA) went 2-for-2 on the day. Fifth year
Tori Walker (Plain City, Ohio) went 1-for-2 with two RBI while junior
Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) went 2-for-3 for the Bobcats.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after the runner at third stole home. Indiana scored one run on two hits and left one runner on base before heading to the top of the second.
After two innings of very little action, the Hoosiers got hot in the bottom of the fourth adding two runs to their lead with a two-run homer to right center field.
The Bobcats answered in the bottom of the fifth when
Tori Walker hit a single that advanced sophomore
Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) to give Ohio its first run of the day.
Indiana held Ohio's offense in the top of the sixth, before adding three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Hoosiers scored three runs on four hits and left one runner on base.
Ohio threatened in the next frame when
Tori Walker singled to left field allowing sophomore
Yasmine Logan to score. A few pitches later, Englant hit a single out past second and advancing two runners home to bring the Bobcats within three runs.
On the last play of the game, senior
Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, TX) hit a sacrifice fly that turned into a double play but allowed for the last Ohio run to reach home.
In the end, the Bobcats were unable to overcome the Hoosiers early lead, falling 7-5 in their first game of the day.
In the circle was senior
Kylie Coffelt (Bradford, Ohio), who pitched six innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits in the loss.
