Isphording Named 2022 Broyles Award Nominee

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Ohio football Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks coach Scott Isphording has been named on of 51 nominees for the 2022 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced today (Nov. 15).Â
The 2022 season marks Isphording's 10th season and second stint with the Bobcats, returning to Athens in 2014 as the quarterbacks coach after four years with Toledo. Previously, he served as Ohio's tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.Â
So far this season, the Bobcats have racked up 4,442 total offensive yards, 3,147 of which were in the air. They've scored 24 passing touchdowns and average 314.70 passing yards per game. On the ground, Ohio has 15 touchdowns and averages 129.5 rushing yards per game.Â
Under Isphording's guidance, redshirt junior quarterback Kurtis Rourke has passed 5,000 career passing yards. He also made program history against Fordham (Sept. 24), going for 527 yards in the air and breaking a record that was set in 1983. Against Buffalo (Nov. 1), Rourke became the first Ohio quarterback since 2008 to throw five touchdowns in one game.Â
Isphording coached one of Ohio's greatest quarterbacks, Nathan Rourke, from 2017-19. Rourke finished with a 24-13 as starting quarterback and was under center for an unprecedented three-straight bowl victories Rourke was a two-time winner of the Jon Cornish Trophy, which is awarded annually to the most outstanding Canadian player in NCAA Football.Â
In 2016, Ohio's quarterbacks set single-season records in pass attempts with 458 combined. They also completed the second-most passes in school history with 250. Ohio passed for 3,142 yards which was second-most in school history and threw for 22 touchdown passes which ranks fourth all-time. In 2015, the Bobcat quarterbacks passed for 3,026 yards, which ranks third all-time in program history. The offense totaled 5,378 yards, which ranks third all-time in program history as well.
In Isphording's first season working with the Bobcat quarterbacks, both Derrius Vick and JD Sprague found success through the air and on the ground. The duo combined for 11 passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns. The offense totaled 4,443 yards of offense which ranks fifth all-time in program history. Vick and Sprague threw for 2,474 yards for this season, which is sixth all-time in program history.

The 51 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.

A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists, five finalists from the list of nominees, and an overall winner.

The 2021 Broyles Award winner was Josh Gattis, who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Michigan. Gattis is now the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami. Previous winners are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award until the completion of three seasons.
