MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Ohio soccer team (7-5-2, 3-3-1 MAC) returned to action Thursday evening (Oct. 13), defeating Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan (2-9-3, 1-4-2 MAC), 4-1, at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Overall, CMU outshot Ohio 14-12, but the Bobcats registered seven attempts on goal to CMU's five. CMU also recorded eight corner kicks to Ohio's three.
Individually, Ohio was led by redshirt senior
Haley Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) with two goals on three shots with two on goal. Senior
Regan Berg (Kalamazoo, Mich.) was next, adding a goal and an assist on three shots with one on goal. Junior
Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky.) added a goal on one shot, while graduate student
Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio) added an assist, and three shots and senior
Ella Bianco (Dayton, Ohio) also registered an assist.
In net, graduate student
Sam Wexell (Irwin, Pa.) played all 90 minutes, allowing one goal and making four saves on 14 shots faced.
The Bobcats struck first early in the first half, with Ohio taking a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute after Miller scored off an assist from Berg. After a few chances, Central Michigan stuck in the 29
th minute, knotting the game at 1-1 not even midway through the first half.
The tie did not last long, with Miller scoring her second goal of the game a minute later, this one assisted by Townsend, putting Ohio up 2-1. After the Bobcats' second goal, the Ohio offense kept up the pressure on the CMU defense. However, Ohio would not add on before the end of the half, going into halftime with the Bobcats leading 2-1.
At the half, Ohio outshot CMU, 9-6, with five shots on goal compared to CMU's two. CMU recorded three corner kicks to Ohio's two.
It took just 30 seconds into the second half for the Bobcats to extend its lead, with Berg scoring in the 46
thminute, putting Ohio up 3-1. Ohio added on again in the 54
th minute thanks to a goal from Robertson which was assisted by Bianco, putting the Bobcats up 4-1.
Over the remainder of the game, the Bobcats offense kept up the pressure, while the Ohio defense held CMU at bay, sealing the 4-1 victory.
Up next, the Bobcats are back in Athens on Sunday, Oct. 16 when they host Ball State. First touch is set for 1 p.m. at Chessa Field.
