CHRISTANSBURG, Va. – The Ohio swimming and diving squad opened its 2022-23 season on Saturday, competing in a tri-meet against Virginia Tech and George Washington at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Ohio defeated George Washington, 188.5-111.5, while falling to host Virginia Tech, 196-104.
"We faced two good teams in Virginia tech and George Washington today," head coach
Mason Norman said. "Our whole team came in and did what they were supposed to do. We beat a championship team in George Washington, for the A10 and proved that we can be competitive versus an acc school who was ranked highly preseason. We have some work still to do with race strategy and pacing but our fitness and will to compete was excellent."
Ohio opened the season with the 200-yard medley relay, with the Ohio team of freshman
Allison Schrank (Blaine, Minn.), freshman
Annmaria Hornyak (Debrecen, Hungary), junior
Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio) and jnuor
Caroline Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa.) placed second with a time of 1:42.88.
In the 1,000 free, freshman
Lauren Hartel (Arlington, Va.) made her collegiate debut, placing second, touching in at 10:21.15. Junior
Morgan Croaning (Carmel, Ind.) added a fifth-place finish for the Bobcats, completing the race in 10:24.92.
In the 200-yard free event, Ohio took places three-five with senior
McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) finishing third in 1:52.26, followed by freshman
Anna McGrath and senior
Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio) finishing in 1:53.18 and 1:53.42, respectively.
Schrank was back in action in the 100-yard backstroke, earning a second-place finish with a time of 56.92. Ohio then took the top-two spots in the 100-yard backstroke, with Hornyak placing first (1:04.12), followed by freshman
Emily Ellsworth, who placed second in 1:05.25
Senior
Madeline Marks (Bentonville, Ark.) picked up a third-place finish in the 200-yard fly, earning a time of 2:05.34, while sophomore
Gabrielle McKee (Gilbertsville, Pa.) finished fourth in 2:05.96. Dunigan (23.76) and junior
Meg Voigt (Bryan, Ohio) placed fourth and fifth in the 50 free, with Voigt finishing in 24.57.
The 100 free say Grau (52.28) and Dunigan (52.53) earn a fourth and fifth place finishes. Junior
Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) finished the 200 back in fourth place with a time of 2:04.24. Then in the 200-yard breaststroke, Hornyak finished first with a time of 2:20.79, followed by Ellsworth in second with a final time of 2:22.61.
Hartel was back in action in the 500 free, finishing second with a tole of 5:01.51. Meanwhile, in the 100 fly, Brust finished third with a time of 56.23. Brust was right back in action in the 200 IM, finishing second with a time of 2:06.67, followed by Hornyak who finished in third with a time of 2:07.33.
The Bobcats wrapped up competition with the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the Bobcats' 'A' team of Fortman, Grau, Dunigan and Voigt placed second with a time of 3:29.92.
In diving, the 1-meter event saw senior
Sienna Breton (Cheshire, Conn.) place sixth with a score of 242.70, while senior
Halli Siwik (Fishers, Ind.) finished nineth (231.00). In the 3-meter dive, Breton earned a sixth-place finish with a score of 255.55, while Siwik placed 11
th with a score of 228.00).
Up next, the Bobcats return to Athens Oct. 14-15 for the 2022 Ohio Invitational where Ohio will host Wingate, Findlay and Bellarmine for the two-day event at the Aquatic Center.
