ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the 2020 class of the Kermit Blosser Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame. The class of 2020 includes
Geoff Carlston (Volleyball; 2003-07, 2021-Present), Jennifer Scholl (Swimming and Diving; '93) and the 1970 Ohio Baseball Team.
Geoff Carlston is in the first year of his second stint as head volleyball coach for Ohio. His first time coaching the Bobcats came in 2003 and ran until the end of the 2007. During his first tenure as head coach, he built a powerhouse in Athens. The Bobcats reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the five seasons he was at the helm, won the regular-season conference title each year, and finished the five-season span with a 144-22 record. Ohio won 78 of 80 MAC matches; at one point winning 64 consecutive MAC contests, went 14-1 in the MAC tournament, and won four tournament trophies. His .968 winning percentage against MAC foes is the highest in conference history. He also led a squad to a ranking in the AVCA's Top 25 for 42 consecutive weeks, including reaching its highest ranking in school history at No. 13 in 2007. Four Bobcats were named MAC Player of the Year (Lauren Hageman, 2003, Briana Adamovsky, 2004, Julia Winkfield, 2005 and Melissa Griffin, 2007) and a pair were tabbed MAC Freshman of the Year (Amanda Anderson, 2005 and Ellen Herman, 2006). He was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. Carlston returns to Ohio with a career record of 413-217 (.656) and a 15-12 (.556) NCAA Tournament record.
Jennifer Scholl was a four-year letter winner for the Bobcats Swimming and Diving team from 1989-1992. She graduated from Ohio University College of Education in 1993 after majoring in Elementary Education. She can be found in the Swimming and Diving record books for three different events; the 100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay. All three times were set in 1991. The Swimming and Diving team secured overall MAC championships all four years she was on the team, and she helped secure MAC titles in the 200 and 400 medley relay in 1991 and 1992. She received national recognition in 1991 when she was named an NCAA All-American.
Perhaps the most decorated team in Ohio history, the 1970 Bobcats baseball team left an undeniable mark on the Ohio record book. The squad earned Ohio's 12th MAC Championship, posting a league record of 14-1. Ohio's non-conference achievements were equally impressive, earning wins over Wake Forest, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame. The `Cats scorched opponents with an overpowering hitting attack, leading the nation in batting average. Ohio's team ERA was just 3.19, led by 13-0 pitcher Ed Robbins. Ohio traveled up the road to Columbus for the NCAA District IV playoffs. The Bobcats narrowly defeated Minnesota in game one, and then downed Southern Illinois in consecutive games to win the district. With the three wins, Ohio advanced to the College World Series for the only time in program history. The `Cats held their own with the nation's best, defeating Southern Cal and Iowa State in Omaha. Ohio was eliminated by eventual champion Florida State but earned a fourth-place finish that stands today as the best-ever finish by a member of the MAC. Mike Hannah, Ed Robbins, and Mike Schmidt all earned NCAA All-American recognition. Schmidt and Steve Swisher went on to enjoy long MLB careers, with Swisher playing from 1974-82 and Schmidt from 1972-1989.
