AKRON, Ohio – The Ohio soccer team (6-3-0, 2-0 MAC) returned to action on Sunday, defeating Akron (2-8-0, 0-2 MAC), 1-0, at FirstEnergy Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats struck 50 seconds into the second half when sophomore
Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky.) scored her third goal of the season off an assist by senior
Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio), giving Ohio a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats' defense was able to hold strong over the remaining 44 minutes of the game, sealing the 1-0 win for Ohio.
Ohio outshot the Zips, 12-10, with six on goal, compared to Akron's three. The Zips also attempted six corners, while Ohio did not attempt one.
Individually, Robertson led Ohio with one goal on three shots, while Townsend added an assist and three shots. Meanwhile, graduate student
Madison Clayton (Waynesburg, Pa.) added one shot on goal, as did graduate student
Sarina Dirrig (Powell, Ohio).
In goal, senior
Sam Wexell (Irwin, Pa.) played all 90 minutes, securing the shutout while making three saves.
The Bobcats continue MAC play next Thursday when Ohio heads to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
