TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (11-11, 5-7 MAC) suffered a 7-6 setback to Toledo (6-19, 4-8 MAC) on Sunday April 4) at Scott Park, forcing the Bobcats to settle for a split in the four-game Mid-American Conference weekend series against the Rockets.
Ohio led by a 4-1 score following the top half of the fifth inning, but Toledo scored three runs in the bottom half to tie it and then added three more in the seventh to earn the comeback win.
The Bobcats were led at the plate by graduate student third baseman Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio), who finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. He and junior catcher Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) accounted for five of Ohio's nine hits on the day, with Minzey collecting two singles as well as drawing two walks and driving in a run.
Toledo plated the game's first run in the home half of the fourth, but Ohio responded in its next turn at-bat by scoring four runs thanks to some two-out lightning. Redshirt senior shortstop Joe Weisenseel (Strongsville, Ohio) drew a one-out walk, then redshirt junior second baseman Michael Richardson (Cambridge, Md.) singled to right field one out later. Both advanced 90 feet on a passed ball, setting the table for graduate student first baseman Harry Witwer-Dukes (Monmouth, Ore.) to give the Bobcats the leading by driving two runs in with a single up the middle. Witwer-Dukes then stole second, and after a walk by senior left fielder Sebastian Fabik (Lebanon, Ohio), scored on a base hit to left by Hafner. Minzey made it a three-run lead for the Bobcats when he singled to right center to drive in Fabik.
The Rockets responded quickly, however, scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame to tie the ballgame. Ohio retook the lead in the seventh after Fabik coaxed a one-out walk and then scored on a double to left center by Hafner, but Toledo retaliated in the bottom of the frame by plating three runs to up 7-5. The Bobcats got a run back in the eighth on a one-out solo home run to right by senior center fielder Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.). Ohio had the tying run on base in the ninth after Hafner beat out a one-out single to short, but the Bobcats could not bring him home.
Junior right-handed pitcher Colin Sells (Lancaster, Ohio) gave the Bobcats an opportunity to keep the ballgame close late, throwing a spotless final 1.2 innings of relief. He tallied four strikeouts.
Ohio will return to Athens and Bob Wren Stadium next weekend for a four-game MAC series against Eastern Michigan. Game one is scheduled for Friday (April 9) at 6 p.m. ET.
