ATHENS, Ohio—The Ohio field hockey team (5-9, 3-9 MAC) finished a two-game sweep against Bellarmine (0-13) with a 5-1 win on Sunday (April 25) afternoon at Pruitt Field.
"Typically only one team at the end of the year ends with a win and that would be the national champion," head coach Ali Johnstone said. "But for us, we actually got to finish our weekend and celebrate the seniors with two wins."
Senior Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) led Ohio with two goals and two assists. She started the scoring in the 12th minute off a pass from Sienna Sakich. Shive assisted on a goal by sophomore Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) a few minutes later in the 17th minute.
Freshman Tasmin Williams (Surrey, United Kingdom) also had two goals in the win. The first came on an unassisted goal in the 19th minute. Williams scored again in the 37th minute on Shive's second assist of the game.
Ohio dominated on both ends of the field in the win. Offensively, the Bobcats fired 22 total shots with 19 on goal. They also received four penalty corners and scored on one of them. Shive and Whittle led the team with six shots each. Shive put three of hers on goal and Whittle out all six of her shots on goal.
The Ohio defense held the knights to only three shots on goal and only allowed one penalty corner. The lone Bellarmine goal of the weekend came in the second quarter from Amber HofnekJerembo.
Freshman Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) started the game in goal for Ohio. She made one save on two shots faced. Junior Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) came in for the second half and saved the only shot that she faced.
The Bobcats' leading scorer, Shive, is a senior but she has elected to stay for another season at Ohio.
"She capitalizes on so many opportunities and she works her tail off," Johnstone said. "Yeah, it's exciting; it's great. It's great to have her back."
Senior Leah Warren (Hamilton, New Zealand) will join Shive with her extra year of eligibility next season.
The Bobcats will return to action this fall.
