ATHENS, Ohio-- The Ohio Bobcats field hockey team (4-9, 3-9 MAC) took a 2-0 victory over Bellarmine (0-12) on a rainy Saturday (April 24) afternoon at Pruitt Field. The Bobcats snapped a two-game losing streak with the win on senior day.
"You know I'm all about defense and keeping them out of our defensive end is not easy," head coach Ali Johnstone said. "Being able to plug those holes takes a lot of discipline from the defense, so I love that."
Ohio honored its six seniors before the game for their contributions to the program. One of those seniors, midfielder Emma Spinetto (Louisville, Ky.), earned her third assist of the season as she passed the ball to Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) who gave the Bobcats an early lead in the eighth minute.
Senior Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) doubled Ohio's early lead in the 13th minute when she deflected a shot from fellow senior Leah Warren (Hamilton, New Zealand) into the net off a penalty corner.
While the Bobcats were not able to add to their score after the first quarter, they did continue to fire shots at the Bellarmine net. Ohio finished with 26 shots and 16 shots on goal. Shive led the Bobcats with 11 shots, six on goal, followed by Whittle and Warren, who each had four shots.
"It makes me emotional and it makes me really proud," Johnstone said. "I'm just proud of them all staying and working their tails off the play the sport. It's been amazing; they're unbelievable."
Bellarmine goalkeeper Breanna McWhorter finished with 14 saves and two goals allowed.
Ohio also held a huge advantage with 14 total penalty corners compared to just one by Bellarmine. The Bobcats defense shut down any offensive potential from Bellarmine, only allowing three total shots and one on goal.
Junior Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) started in goal for Ohio without facing a shot on goal in the first half. Freshman Macy Lotze (Louisville, Ky.) went into goal for the second half and saved the only shot that she faced.
The Bobcats conclude the 2021 season on Sunday (April 25) with another game against Bellarmine. First touch is set for 1:30 p.m.
