ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio soccer team (3-7-0, 3-7-0) wrapped up the regular season on Sunday afternoon (April 11), falling 1-0, to Buffalo (6-1-1, 6-1-1) on Senior Day at Chessa Field.

Prior to the game, the Bobcats honored seniors, defender Paige Knorr (Cincinnati, Ohio), midfielder Jenni Santacaterina (Geneva, Ohio), midfielder Konstantina Giannou (Riza, Greece), forward Paige Pappanastos (Orland Park, Ill.), midfielder Sarina Dirrig (Powell, Ohio) and goalkeeper Sydney Malham (Nashville, Tenn.) for their time in the Green and White.

"In college athletics you play for four years and you put a lot into those four years," head coach Aaron Rodgers said. "Ultimately, that time will come to an end and you want to honor their legacy by giving the best that you can."

Ohio out-shot Buffalo 9-8 overall, while UB put six of those shots on goal, compared to Ohio's five. Junior forward Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio) recorded five shots for Ohio, including two on goal, Santacaterina, sophomore Ella Bianco (Dayton. Ohio) and freshman forward Shae Robertson (Lexington, Ky.) all recorded one shot with one on goal.

The only goal of the game came in the 29th minute when Buffalo's Marcy Barberic scored on an assist from Leah Wengender to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead into the half.

The Bobcats battled in the second half, generating a number of chances, including an attempt by Townsend in the 69th minute that forced a save by UB keeper, Emily Kelly. Unfortunately, the Buffalo defense held strong, with Ohio falling, 1-0.

In net, an injured Malham recorded the start on her senior day, but was replaced by junior Sam Wexell (Irwin, Pa.) who played 88 minutes, allowing one goal while making five saves on the day. Meanwhile, Kelly played all 90 minutes for Buffalo, recording the shutout and making five saves.

The game concludes the 2020-21 season for the Bobcats. Ohio soccer will be back in action for a traditional season next fall.
