ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (9-8, 3-4 MAC) split a Mid-American Conference doubleheader with Central Michigan (9-8, 1-2 MAC) on Saturday (March 27) afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium. Ohio defeated Central Michigan, 4-3, in game one, and dropped game two, 12-2.
Game One: Ohio 4, Central Michigan 3
Senior center fielder Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) led the way at the plate for Ohio, going 1-for-3 with a three-run home run. Redshirt senior shortstop Joe Weisenseel (Strongsville, Ohio) was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
The Chippewas scored first, plating two in the second inning.
Ohio took a 3-2 lead in the third. With runners on first and third, Peterson went deep with a three-run home run over the right-field wall.
Central Michigan tied it up in the next frame, but Ohio was quick to respond. Graduate student third baseman Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
On the mound, junior RHP Braxton Kelly (Ulysses, Ky.) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four. Senior RHP Edward Kutt IV (Westlake, Calif.) earned his third win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out four. Senior LHP Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) picked up his second save of the season, striking out two in the final frame.
Game Two: Central Michigan 12, Ohio 2
Similar to game one, the Chippewas got on the board first. A sac fly to left field in the first inning scored the first run. Central Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the third on a bases-loaded sac fly to centerfield.
Ohio got on the board in the fourth inning, knotting the game at two. The Bobcats loaded the bases with one out. Junior catcher Mason Minzey (Grand Blanc, Mich.) lined a single through the left side, driving in two runs to tie the game.
Central Michigan broke open the game with a six-run sixth inning with four runs coming on a grand slam to right field. The Chippewas put the game out of reach for the Bobcats in the seventh, tacking on another four runs.
Freshman pitcher Logan Jones (Canton, Ohio) took the loss for the Bobcats, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up six runs on four hits and striking out five.
Ohio will conclude the four-game series with Central Michigan on Sunday (March 28). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET from Bob Wren Stadium.
