ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio baseball team (8-32, 5-16 MAC) fell 7-4 against Northern Kentucky (17-22, 6-9 Horizon) on Tuesday, April 21.
Ohio tallied four runs on seven hits while committing four errors. Northern Kentucky tallied seven runs on nine hits with one error.
"We need to just stay focused…They need to be able to bring their A-game this weekend at home," Ohio coach Andrew See said. "I expect to have their best energy, their best effort, and best toughness this weekend."
Fifth-year infielder Will Henson (Chicago, Ill.) led Ohio on offense with two hits, including a home run. Senior infielder Dylan Shepherd (Barrie, Ontario) was also productive at the plate, scoring a run after reaching base via a single. Sophomore outfielder Brady Alexander (Glenshaw, Pa.) tallied a late RBI for the Bobcats with a single in the ninth, his second hit of the day.
Junior right-handed pitcher AJ Dallmayer (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) got the start for the Bobcats, going three innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs while striking out five. Redshirt sophomore lefty Aiden Cook (Penfield, N.Y.) was effective out of the bullpen, allowing no runs and striking out two over one and a third innings of work.
Northern Kentucky loaded the bases before recording an out in the top of the first inning. The Bobcats would get out of the inning with minimal damage, but still found themselves in an early deficit, allowing two runs.
Dallmayer and the Bobcat defense bounced back after a rocky start, allowing no runs in the second or third. Through three, Dallmayer had already tallied five strikeouts, including striking out all three batters he faced in the second.
The Norse added on to their lead with a run in the fourth after a leadoff single would come around to score on a sac-fly.
Back-to-back walks to start the home-half of the fourth would eventually result in runs for Ohio when Henson scored on an error to make it 3-1.
Northern Kentucky would load the bases again in the fifth, resulting in two more runs to extend its lead to 5-1. A two-out double in the sixth would add another run for the Norse to make it 6-1.
Ohio got back in the scoring column in the bottom half of the sixth when Henson started the inning with a solo homer to right. A double by Shepherd later in the inning would later result in another run when he scored on a passed ball to make it 6-3.
The Norse worked to re-extend their lead in the eighth when an unearned run came across to score to make it 7-3.
The Bobcats fought back in the ninth as Alexander lined an RBI single to right to bring the score to 7-4. Northern Kentucky would be forced to make a pitching change in the inning, but Ohio couldn't generate enough offense to make the comeback.
Up next, the Bobcats will host a three-game conference series against Akron starting on Friday, April 24. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET and the game will be available to watch on YouTube.
