ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (2-4, 2-4 MAC) fell to Central Michigan (4-3, 2-2 MAC), 2-1, at Pruitt Field on Saturday (March 27) night.
The Bobcats took the lead early when senior midfielder Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio) scored her fourth goal of the season, her third in the last two games, in the 25th minute. Shive has now scored in three of the last four games.
The lead didn't last for the Bobcats as Taryn Damm responded with a goal to tie the game in the 27th minute. Central Michigan took the lead in the third quarter with a goal from Callie Quinn in the 43rd minute.
Ohio was able force consistent pressure against the Chippewas' defense, outshooting Central Michigan 14-3. Shive put five of her six shots on net and both senior defender Leah Warren (Hamilton, New Zealand) and sophomore midfielder Katelyn Whittle (Glenwood, Md.) put two shots on net themselves.
"You have to give major credit to Central Michigan for the way they defended," Ohio head coach Ali Johnstone said. "They were so physical, they didn't let anything easy happen for us today."
The Bobcats put seven shots on goal in the third quarter and had three penalty corners in the quarter. Junior goalkeeper Nele Graner (Bonn, Germany) faced three shots on goal and saved two of them. Central Michigan goalkeeper Katie Maxim was able to make eight saves on the nine shots on goal that she faced.
The Bobcats will return to action at home for a two-game series against Appalachian State. The first game will be on Friday (April 2) at 1 p.m.
