Ohio Softball Completes Four-Game Sweep of UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Ohio softball team (4-5) wrapped up the weekend series with UNC Wilmington (2-11) on Sunday, sweeping the day's doubleheader while also securing the four-game sweep of the SeaHawks. The Bobcats took game one 8-3, then took game two, 5-4. 

GAME ONE: Ohio 8, UNCW 3
The Bobcats out-hit UNCW, 10-6 and were led by senior outfielder Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior catcher Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) added two hits, including a two-run homerun. Graduate transfer Mikenzie Vaughn (Kennesaw, Ga.) added a three-run homerun, while junior infielder Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) added a two run homerun. 

Ohio struck immediately in the top of the first inning on a three-run homerun from Vaughn putting the Bobcats up 3-0 early. The SeaHawks responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs to cut the Ohio lead to one. UNCW then added another in the bottom of the second to send the game to the third tied at 3-3. 

Ohio regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning after Rice hits her first homerun of the season, a two run shot, putting the Bobcats up 5-3. Ohio added on in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs on two hits and was capped by a two run homerun from Spacek, helping put the Bobcats up, 8-3. 

UNCW would load the bases in the bottom of the inning, however, starting pitcher, junior Mackensie Kohl (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) struck out the final batter, sealing the Bobcats victory. 

In the circle, Kohl pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walked four and struck out seven. 

For UNCW, starting pitcher sophomore Amberlyn Pearce went seven innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits, walked six and struck out three.

GAME TWO: Ohio 5. UNCW 4
The Bobcats outshot UNCW, 9-6, and were led by Englant with two hits, run scored and an RBI, while freshman infielder Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) added two hits, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored for Ohio. 

The Bobcats got on the board first in the top of the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead. The Bobcats extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning, before an RBI single from UNCW cut the Ohio lead to 2-1 going into the top of the fifth inning. 

The Bobcats responded, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning, including a two RBI triple from Paoli, give the Bobcats a 5-2 lead. 

UNCW went on to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut Ohio's lead to 5-4, however, the Bobcats defense held strong, sealing the 5-4 win.  

In the circle, senior pitcher Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out one. 

For UNCW, junior Janel Gamache pitched four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two,

Ohio finally returns to Athens for the first time since April 2019 on Friday, March 19 to start a four-game series with Northern Illinois.
