ATHENS, Ohio – On Senior Day, the Ohio soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over Miami (7-6-3, 4-4) on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17) at Chessa Field. Sarina Dirrig was the lone goalscorer for the Bobcats. With the victory, Ohio moves to 10-3-2 overall and 6-0-2 in conference play, and stays atop the MAC standings.
The two teams battled back and forth from the start, but neither team were able to find the back of the net in the first half. The Redhawks put the pressure on the Bobcat defense in the first 45 minutes, as they took seven total shots compared to just four for Ohio.
After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats struck in the seventy-fifth minute when Dirrig scored her second goal of the season off an assist by junior Regan Berg, giving Ohio a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats' defense held strong the remainder of the game, securing the 1-0 victory for the Bobcats and extending Ohio's unbeaten streak to eight games.
Ohio outshot the Redhawks, 11-8, with the Bobcats taking control in the second half with seven shots on goal, compared to Miami's one. The Bobcats also attempted three corners, while the Redhawks attempted two.
Individually, sophomore Shae Robertson, senior Abby Townsend, and senior Haley Miller led the team with two shots on goal apiece. Graduate student Madison Clayton added one shot on goal, as did senior Maeve Maloney.
In goal, senior Sam Wexell played all 90 minutes, securing her sixth shutout in conference play while making three saves.
