Ohio Soccer Defeats Northern Illinois For Third Straight Victory

DEKALB, Ill. – The Ohio soccer team returned to action on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 10), and picked up their third straight win, as they shutout Northern Illinois (4-10, 1-5) with a 4-0 victory. The Bobcats (9-3-1, 5-0-1) scored a season high in goals while also continuing their dominance in the defensive third. Carsyn Prigge, Olivia Sensky, Madison Clayton, and Haley Miller were the goalscorers for the Bobcats.
"Coming to NIU is always a difficult trip but our team showed amazing resilience and focus," head coach Aaron Rodgers said after the game. "I'm very proud of how we stayed intense and organized."
Ohio started their scoring in the 12th minute, as Prigge fired in her first goal of the season from 30 yards out. Fellow midfielder Isabella Ginocchi tallied her second assist of the 2021 season, and was the second game in a row that Ginocchi recorded an assist. The Bobcats added on to their lead less than 10 minutes later, with Sensky converting on a free kick in the 20th minute. It was Sensky's second goal of the season, both of them coming off of set pieces.
The first half ended with Ohio leading 2-0, as the Bobcats controlled the attack in the first 45 minutes. Ohio took eight total shots, while preventing the Huskies from taking any shot attempts.
The second half was a continuation of Ohio's offensive control. Clayton's goal was slotted home in the 63rd minute, as the grad transfer cleaned up a loose rebound off an initial shot by Shae Robertson. It was Clayton's second goal of the season. The fourth and final goal of the contest was scored in the 73rd minute by Miller after an assist by Clayton. Miller sent home her third goal of the year from outside the 18-yard box, beating the Northern Illinois goalkeeper on a shot to the far goalpost.
Ohio finished the game with 19 total shots (10 on goal), compared to Northern Illinois' three total shots (1 on goal). Ohio goalkeeper Sam Wexell recorded one save on the day, before being replaced in the 80th minute by Ana Aguado.
With the win, the Bobcats stay atop the Mid-American Conference table, with a total of 16 points.

Ohio will remain on the road for their next contest, as they travel to Ball State (4-7-1, 2-3-1) on Thurday, Oct. 21. The Cardinals were defeated by Toledo by a score of 2-1 in their last game. First touch at the Briner Sports Complex is scheduled for 4 p.m.
