HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- The Ohio swimming & diving team (3-1) earned a 167-130 win over regional rival Marshall on Sunday (January 24) afternoon, picking up a road victory at Fitch Natatorium. The Bobcats showed up and showed out, taking charge of the opportunity by picking up 10 first-place finishes.
"We did a nice job of competing today as a team," third-year head coach Mason Norman said. "We were tested throughout the meet by Marshall, who are a very good team, but we were able to put people in places to come out on top. We have had a really hard couple of weeks of training, and it was really nice to get back at it in the pool and on the boards, racing and diving, especially given this season. We had a couple of people really stepped up today with a couple of wins from Gracie Riddle, Sam Glass and Madeline Marks that helped our team come home with the win."
Sophomore Madeline Marks (Bentonville, Ark.) garnered two first-place finishes, claiming the top spot in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:35.59) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.69). She also notched a third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:36.57.
Sophomore Grace Riddle (Canal Winchester, Ohio) played a big role in the win, securing first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.91) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.27). She was also the third leg of the first place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:31.58), joining forces with sophomore Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio), sophomore McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio) and freshman Mollie Brackett (Appleton, Wis.). Individually, Fortman took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.96 while Grau won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.23 and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.59. Brackett took third in both the 50-yard freestyle (25.10) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.05).
Senior Samantha Glass (Vila Hills, Ky.) secured first-place finishes in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.33) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:30.21).
Redshirt sophomore Kesley Morgan (Pickerington, Ohio) clocked a 2:19.48 to win the 200-yard breaststroke and also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.99.
Redshirt junior Hannah Schlegel (Birdsboro, Pa.) provided Ohio with a pair of third-place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:48.45) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.26) while sophomore Maya Conte (Brecksville, Ohio) took third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.14.
Diving was vital to the Bobcats' success, with Ohio claiming the top two spots on three-meter as sophomore Halli Siwik (Fishers, Ind.) placed first with a score of 216.75 and sophomore Sienna Breton (Cheshire, Conn.) took second with a score of 215.47. Siwik also took second on one-meter, posting a score of 221.41.
Ohio is slated to be back in action next Saturday (January 30) for a Mid-American Conference dual meet against Toledo at the Ohio University Aquatic Center. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. ET.
