CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Ohio baseball team (3-8) dropped the final game of the series to Southeast Missouri State (6-6), 9-7, on Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field.
Ohio was led at the plate by redshirt junior DH Devonte Washington (Twinsburg, Ohio) who hit his second home run of the season. Washington finished the day 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Redshirt sophomore INF Spencer Harbert (Middletown, Del.) hit his second home run of the season in the fourth inning and finished the game 1-for-4.
Senior INF Trevor Hafner (Perrysburg, Ohio) drove in two RBIs with a double and has six RBIs this season. Redshirt senior Ryan Sargent (Algonquin, Ill.) had two RBIs and finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Junior OF Isaiah Peterson (Lincoln, Neb.) had his first RBI of the season with a double in the second inning.
Graduate student RHP Danny Brackman (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore RHP Colin Sells (Lancaster, Ohio) each tossed 1.0 innings of shutout baseball. Sophomore RHP Braxton Kelly (Ulysses, Ky.) fell to 1-1 in his first start of the season after striking out three batters and allowing six earned runs. Junior LHP Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) tossed 2.0 innings and fanned three batters.
SEMO took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out Andrew Keck double down the right field line. The Redhawks added to their lead with an Austin Blazevic single to go up 2-0.
Ohio cut the SEMO lead to 2-1 in the second inning when Sargent singled to right field to score Peterson. Peterson reached on a double to left field.
Justin Dirden hit a solo home run to right field to put SEMO up 3-1.
Harbert answered with his own solo home run in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom half of the inning, both Caleb Feuerstake and Tyler Wilber hit solo home runs to give SEMO a 5-3 lead.
Washington's second home run of the season came in the top of the fifth inning over the left field fence to cut the SEMO advantage to 5-4.
Wade Stauss and Dirden each hit two-run home runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively, to go up 9-5.
Ohio scored twice in the seventh inning. Washington singled to left field to bring home Sargent, who reached on a walk and was moved to second on a redshirt junior C Dan McCauley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) single. Richardson then doubled down the line to score McCauley.
Hafner added two runs for the Bobcats in the top of the ninth with a double to left center field that scored Washington and Sargent to cut the SEMO lead to 9-7. Sargent and Washington both reached on singles.
Ohio will continue non-conference play in Johnson City, Tennessee next weekend against Marist, Wagner and ETSU.
