Ohio Softball Concludes Play at the 2020 Buzz Classic

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ohio softball team (0-5) wrapped up play at the 2020 Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech this afternoon. The Bobcats dropped their first game of the day to UAB (3-1), 7-2, before falling to host Georgia Tech (1-3), 5-3, in their final game of the weekend. 

GAME ONE: UAB 7, Ohio 2 
After the Bobcats went down in order to open the game, UAB recorded one run on two hits, however, starting pitcher freshman Holly Brehm (Mullens, W. Va.) and the Ohio defense worked out of a two-out, bases loaded jam to send the game to the second only down 1-0. 

After a scoreless second inning from both teams, the Bobcats struck in the top of the third inning. After sophomore Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) led the inning off with a single to right field, she moved to third when junior Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) reached on a fielding error, putting runners on second and third with no outs. With one out, junior Allie Englant (Long Beach Calif.) laced a single to right field, putting Ohio up 2-1 going into the bottom of the frame. 

UAB threatened to add on in the bottom of the third inning after a one-out single put a runner on first. However, the Ohio defense turned an inning ending double play to hold the 2-1 lead going into the fourth inning.

UAB responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, when with the bases loaded, Sierra Frazier hit a three-run double down the left field line to give the Blazers a 4-2 lead going into the top of the fifth inning.  After a scoreless top of the fifth for Ohio, the Blazers added on in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 7-2 lead into the sixth inning. 

Ohio threatened in the top of the sixth inning, with junior Katie Yun (North Canton, Ohio) leading the inning off with a single up the middle. Freshman Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) then drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, the Bobcats were unable to get a run across, sending the game to the bottom of the six down 7-2. 

After the Ohio defense sent UAB down in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats were unable to get any offense going in the top of the seventh inning, falling 7-2 to the Blazers. 

Overall, Ohio scored two runs on three hits and did not commit an error, while UAB scored seven runs on nine hits and committed one error. 

Englant registered one hit and two RBI, while Yun and Spacek both registered hits with Spacek and Rice both scoring runs. 

In the circle, Brehm recorded her first career start, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walked six and struck out one. Junior Madi McCrady entered the game and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two. 

GAME TWO: Georgia Tech 5, Ohio 3 
Georgia Tech struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring on an error. Georgia Tech then put runners on first and third with two outs, however the Bobcats got out of the jam going to the bottom of the inning trailing, 1-0. 

The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the inning. After Englant led off with a walk, Yun followed that up with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. With one out, freshman Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) continued her strong opening weekend, recording a single up the middle to score Englant and tie the game at 1-1 going to the top of the second inning. 

Georgia Tech threatened in the top of the second inning, with a runner reaching on an error and then stealing second. However, the Bobcats were able to record the next three outs to send the game to the bottom of the frame with the game still tied at 1-1. 

After a scoreless bottom of the second for the Bobcats, Georgia Tech struck in the top of the third, taking a 4-1 lead off of a three-run homerun from Cameron Stanford. Ohio tried to get a run back in the bottom of the third inning after Englant reached on a one-out single. However, the Bobcats were unable to get her around, sending the game to the fourth inning with Ohio trailing, 4-1

Ohio attempted to cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bernard singled to lead the inning off. However, the Bobcats were unable to score in the inning, sending the game to fifth inning trailing, 5-1. 

The Bobcats got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Sydney Larson (Liberty Township, Ohio) reached on a single to the pitcher and then scored on an RBI double by Spacek. Spacek then advanced to third on a throw to home, setting up a sacrifice fly from junior Ava Heidorn (Marysville, Ohio) to cut the Ohio deficit to 5-3. Englant then drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, however, the Bobcats were unable to add on, sending the game to the top of the sixth down, 5-3.  

After a scoreless top of the sixth from Georgia Tech, Ohio tried to add another run on in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) reached on a two-out single. However, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the seventh inning with Ohio trailing, 5-3. 

After a scoreless inning for Georgia tech in the top of the seventh, the Bobcats were unable to get anything going in the bottom of the frame, falling to Georgia Tech, 5-3. 

Overall, Ohio scored three runs on seven hits and committed three errors, while Georgia Tech scored five runs on nine hits and did not commit an error. 

Bernard finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, Spacek finished with a double, RBI and a run scored, while Heidorn also finished with an RBI. Englant registered a hit with a run scored, while Fogue and Larson also had base hits for the Bobcats. 

In the circle, redshirt sophomore Baylie Thornhill (Baton Rouge, La.) pitched all seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out two.

The Bobcats head to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the 2020 Chattanooga Classic hosted by UT Chattanooga, Feb. 14-16. While there, Ohio will face off with Western Kentucky, Marshall, Lipscomb and Indiana State.
