CONWAY, S.C. – The Ohio softball team (7-12) continued play at the 2020 Courtyard Marriott Barefoot Landing Invitational Saturday morning, falling to Monmouth (7-6), 2-1 in game one, before defeating host Coastal Carolina (11-4), 13-5 in five innings to conclude their day.
GAME ONE: Monmouth 2, Ohio 1
After Monmouth went down in order in the top of the first, Ohio threatened to strike first in the bottom of the frame. Junior Allie Englant (Long Beach, Calif.) led the inning off with a walk. Then with two outs, she stole second. However, the Bobcats were unable to get her around sending the game to the top of the second still scoreless.
After a scoreless second inning from both teams, Monmouth struck in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on a two-out RBI single, putting them up 2-0 going to the bottom of the frame. Ohio threatened to get a run back in the bottom of the inning when Englant led off the inning with a single and then stole second. However, the Bobcats were unable to score, sending the game to the top of the fourth with the Bobcats trailing, 2-0.
After an uneventful fourth inning from both teams, Ohio threatened again in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Sophia Bernard (Canton, Ohio) led off with a single. However, the Bobcats would be unable to capitalize, sending the game to the sixth with Ohio still trailing, 2-0.
After Monmouth left a runner on second in the top of the sixth, Ohio cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Alexis Dawe (Valley Springs, Calif.) led off with a double to right-center. Then with one out, sophomore Caroline Spacek (Beaumont, Texas) was hit by a pitch and sophomore Caitlin Fogue (Columbia, Mo.) drew a walk to load the bases. Then with two out, junior Brooke Rice (Mason, Ohio) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Dawe and cut the Monmouth lead to 2-1 going into the seventh inning.
After Monmouth went down in order in the top of the seventh inning, Ohio threatened in the bottom of the inning when Dawe reached on a fielding error with two out. However, Ohio was unable to capitalize on the Monmouth mistake, falling 2-1.
Overall, Ohio scored one run on four hits and did not commit an error, while Monmouth scored two runs on five hits and committed one error.
Individually, Dawe recorded a double and a run scored, while Englant, junior Ava Heidorn (Marysville, Ohio) and Bernard all recorded hits for the Bobcats, with Rice registering one RBI.
In the circle, redshirt sophomore Baylie Thornhill (Baton Rouge, La.) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walked three and struck out four batters.
GAME TWO: Ohio 13, Coastal Carolina 5 (5 Innings)
Ohio struck first in the top of the first inning. After Englant walked to lead off the inning. After moving to second and stealing third, an RBI double from junior Katie Yin (North Canton, Ohio) put the Bobcats up, 1-0. Moments later, Spacek reached on an error, giving Ohio a 2-0 lead after one inning. In the bottom of the frame, Coastal struck, scoring four runs on four hits, taking a 4-2 lead after the first frame.
Ohio responded in the top of the second inning. Rice led off with a double to right field. Then with one out, freshman Molly Troutman (Gahanna, Ohio) hit a home run to right-center, tying the game at 4-4. The Bobcats weren't done. After Englant singled and stole second, Dawe drew a walk before an RBI single from Fogue put Ohio up, 6-4, with two out. The Bobcats weren't done. After Spacek drew a walk, an RBI double to right-center from Heidorn put Ohio up, 8-4 going into the bottom of the second inning.
After Coastal Carolina got a run back in the bottom of the second, the Ohio offense went off in the top of the third inning. Bernard singled to lead off. Senior Alexa Holland (Rochester, Ind.) entered to run for her. After Holland moved to second on a single by Troutman, a single by Englant loaded the bases setting up a bases-loaded walk for Dawe, to keep the bases loaded. Yun came to the plate and then crushed a no-out grand slam to left-center, putting Ohio up 13-5 going into the bottom of the inning.
Neither team added on over the next two innings, as the Bobcats secured the 13-5 five-inning victory.
Overall, Ohio scored 13 runs on 11 hits and did not commit and error, while Coastal Carolina scored five runs on eight hits and committed one error.
Yun went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI, while Englant went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Troutman also finished the game with two hits, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.
In the circle, junior Madi McCrady (Brimfield, Ohio) went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out two.
