Ohio Women's Basketball Opens Season Against Liberty

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio women's basketball team (0-0) open the regular season on Tuesday against Liberty (0-0). Tip-off at the Convocation Center is set for 1 p.m. The game can be heard on WOUB 1340 AM and the TuneIn app. General public will not be permitted until further notice. A maximum of four tickets per student-athlete will be available for family members.

 

SERIES HISTORY

This is the first ever meeting between the Flames and the Bobcats.

PRESEASON ALL-MAC

Senior guard Cece Hooks and junior guard Erica Johnson were named Preseason First-Team All-MAC for the second-straight season. Ohio finished second in the coaches poll with 128 points, behind favorite Central Michigan.

BECKY HAMMON MID-MAJOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST

Redshirt junior guard Erica Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) and senior guard Cece Hooks (Dayton, Ohio) have been named to the 2021 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year preseason watch list, Her Hoop Stats announced. Ohio is joined by San Jose State as the only other team with two players on the watchlist. In the Mid-American Conference, Hooks and Johnson are joined by Micaela Kelly of Central Michigan and Dyaisha Fair of Buffalo.

CHERYL MILLER AWARD WATCH LIST

Redshirt junior guard Erica Johnson has been named to the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award watch list, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced The Cheryl Miller Award recognizes the top small forward in NCAA Division I basketball.

NANCY LIEBERMAN AWARD WATCH LIST

Ohio Women's Basketball senior guard Cece Hooks (Dayton, Ohio) has been named to the 2021 Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced.

Hooks also appeared on the list last season. Hooks is one of two players in the MAC to appear on the list.

LAST YEAR'S HONORS

For the second-straight year, Cece Hooks was named MAC Defensive of the Year. Hooks was also named to the All-MAC First team and MAC All-Defensive team.

Joining Hooks was Erica Johnson on the All-MAC first team. Johnson was MAC Freshman of the Year, Sixth Player of the Year and All-MAC third team two years ago. Johnson averaged 21.4 points per game in conference play last season.

1,000 POINT SCORERS

Three Bobcats - Gabby Burris, Erica Johnson and Cece Hooks - are all 1,000 point scorers for Ohio.

Burris averaged 9.9 points per game last season and has a career total of 1,011 points

Johnson has 1,000 total points and scored her 1,000th point in Ohio's win over Western Michigan in the MAC Tournament.

Hooks has 1,569 total points and averaged 18.2 last season.

CECE'S STEALS

Cece Hooks finished the season with 106 steals, second in program history. Hooks' 106 steals was fifth in the nation last year. Her averaged of 3.66 steals per game was also fifth in the nation.

OHIO FILLS IT UP

Ohio's scoring offense finished the season No. 27 in the nation and second in the MAC at 74.3 points per game. Ohio was 14th in the nation in three-point field goals made per game at 8.7.

Individually, Erica Johnson was No. 29 in the nation in points per game at 18.9 while Cece Hooks was No. 45 in the country at 18.2.

ADDING TWO IN DECEMBER

Ohio added three players on signing day - Kendall Hale, Kate Dennis and Yaya Felder - and Hale and Dennis will graduate high school early to join the Bobcats in December.

Dennis comes to Ohio from Guilford High School in Illinois, where she was three-time All NIC-10. Dennis was the NIC-10 Offensive Player of the Year in 2020, and was the fifth freshman to be named all-conference in 2018. Dennis became the program's third-highest scorer ever in just three seasons, and averaged 20.6 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game in her final season at Guilford.

Hale joins the Bobcats from West Clermont High School near Cincinnati. Hale's sister, Jasmine, is currently a member of the Ohio program. As a junior at West Clermont, Hale was all-conference, all-district and honorable mention All-Ohio. Hale was the Under Armour Nationals MVP and a UAA National Champion playing for West Virginia Thunder. In her high school career at West Clermont, Hale averaged 16 points, six rebounds and six assists per game.
