
Ohio Swimming and Diving Opens 2020-21 with Victory at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio swimming and diving team opened the 2020-21 season on Saturday (Nov. 21), defeating Youngstown State, 225-65, inside Beeghly Natatorium.
"It was exciting to get our team back in the pool and on the boards today," head coach Mason Norman said. "We had a lot of improvement from our green and white meet three weeks ago. The team has been working hard and deserved to get on the road and compete"
Ohio opened the day taking the top-two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, with the team of freshman Gabrielle Brust (Granville, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Kelsey Morgan (Pickerington, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Kendra Sheehan (Pickerington, Ohio) and freshman Caroline Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa.) finishing first with a time of 1:47.02.
The 1,000-yard freestyle saw senior Katherine Garrity (Eagan, Minn.) finish in first, clocking in at 10:34.79.
The Bobcats continued to roll in the 200-yard freestyle, taking the top-four spots, with sophomore Grace Riddle (Canal Winchester, Ohio) finishing on top at 1:55.82, coming in .08 seconds ahead of teammate sophomore McKenzie Grau (Mason, Ohio), who clocked in at 1:55.90.
Another one-two-three finish came in the 100-yard backstroke, with Brust finishing in first at 58.09, followed by freshman Riley Bunstine (Alexandria, Ohio) in second at 1:00.14, and Sheehan in third (1:00.95). Morgan took the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:05.76.
Sophomore Madeline Marks (Bentonville, Ark.) (2:07.37) and freshman Peyton Farrell (Beavercreek, Ohio) (2:08.64) finished in first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly. The 50-yard freestyle event saw Dunigan spring to a first-place finish, touching the wall at 24.14. Teammate sophomore Emma Fortman (Madeira, Ohio) finished in third for Ohio, clocking in at 24.65.
The Green and White again took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Grau clocking in at 52.68 and a first-place finish. Sophomore Maya Conte (Brecksville, Ohio) finished second, with a time of 54.31. Senior Samantha Glass (Villa Hills, Ky.) (2:06.90) took the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke, followed by Bunstine who finished in second in 2:10.10.
Morgan again finished on top, this time in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:19.71. The 500-yard freestyle saw Garrity finish in 5:10.98, followed by Fortman in 5:11.12.
The Bobcats went on to take the top-three spots in the 100-yard butterfly, with Brust (56.56) in first, followed by Farrell (59.13) and freshman Mollie Brackett (Appleton, Wis. (59.48).
In the 200-yard IM, Ohio again finished one-two-three. Brust finished on top, clocking in at 2:08.08, while Glass (2:11.96) finished in second, followed by Bunstine (2:14.92) in third.
The final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, saw the Bobcat team of Fortman, Grau, Brackett and Dunigan clock in at 3:32.51 and a first-place finish.
In diving, sophomore Halli Siwik (Fishers, Ind.) finished in second in the 1-meter event, garnering 225.87 points, with sophomore Sienna Breton (Cheshire, Conn.)(217.20) finishing in third and redshirt junior Abigail Jordan (West Chester, Ohio) (171.75) finishing in fourth. Siwik went on to finish second in the 3-meter event as well, scoring 222.00. Breton finished third (214.72), while Jordan finished fourth (172.04).
Ohio is back in action Dec. 3-5 when they head to Oxford, Ohio for the 2020 Miami Invitational.
