Ohio Baseball Drops Extra Innings Contest With USC Upstate, 3-2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Ohio Baseball team (1-7) dropped a 12-inning contest at USC Upstate (4-5), 3-2, in the series opener. Ohio will play a doubleheader with USC Upstate tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m. 

USC Upstate scored the game winning run in the 12th inning with a bases loaded single from Drake Harris.

In his third start of the season, senior RHP Kenny Ogg tossed a season-high 6.0 innings allowed a season-low one earned run. Ogg fanned eight batters while walking just one. Two runs scored while Ogg was on the mound on six hits.

Sophomore RHP Edward Kutt IV (Westlake, Calif.) kept USC Upstate scoreless for three innings and allowed just two runners to reach base. Kutt IV did not give up an earned run while allowing one hit and one walk in 3.0 innings.

Sophomore LHP Brett Manis (Port Huron, Mich.) tossed 2.0 shutout innings and struckout one batter. Manis allowed just one hit.

Freshman Braxton Kelly (Ulysses, Ky.) fell to 0-1 after allowing one earned run in the bottom of the 12th inning.

USC Upstate grabbed an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Spartans had two runs on three hits and one error while stranding two runners.

Ohio punched back with a run in the fifth inning. Freshman INF Zyon Avery (Indianapolis, Ind.) started things off with a single. After moving over to second base on a ground out, redshirt sophomore C Dan McCauley (Pittsburgh Pa.) moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Redshirt junior OF Ryan Sargent (Algonquin, Ill.) scored Avery with a sacrifice fly.

Sargent ended 0-for-3 with one RBI on the sacrifice fly. Avery scored one run and was 1-for-5 with a single.

The Bobcats tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning. Sophomore INF Treyben Funderburg (Beavercreek, Ohio) reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior OF Jack Longo (Mayfield, Ohio). Funderburg moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an error.

Funderburg finished his day 1-for-4 with a single, one run scored and one stolen base. 

Due to weather, Ohio will now play a doubleheader with USC Upstate beginning at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
