ATHENS, Ohio â Ohio swimming and diving added another two wins to the season, defeating Duquesne 177-78 and Xavier 160-97 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21). The Bobcats swept the podium winning 13 of the 14 events.
âI thought we had a great meet. At this point in the season we are starting to fine tune and really get down to preparation for the conference championship,â head coach Rachel Komisarz-Baugh said. âThe girls raced really hard today and we actually had quite a few lifetime-bests, which is really unique at this time in the season. Overall, I am really pleased with how they swam and I think all of their hard work in the pool and paying attention to the details and hitting the milestones along the way are definitely paying off.â
The meet started with a diving exhibition from the Ohio divers, sophomores Olivia Dillon (Newcastle, Aus.) and Nicole Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) and freshman Ireland Littlejohn (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
In the one-meter, Dillon scored 268.35 points, Hughes scored 245.55 and Littlejohn scored 203.93.
The meet started with the 400-yard medley relay with Ohioâs A and B teams securing the top two spots. The A team, consisting of senior Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England), freshman Claire Mikesell (Clearfield, Pa.), sophomore Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) and freshman Emily Zimcosky (Smock, Pa.), finished with a time of 3:49.88. The B team consisted of junior Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.), freshman Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland), and seniors Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) and Josie Barker (Richmond, N. Yorkshire, England) who finished with a time of 4:01.58 to place fifth.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, sophomore Ana Henderson recorded a first-place finish with a time of 10:25.34 just ahead of freshman Mackenzie Caruthers (Hilliard, Ohio) in second with a 10:37.02 time. Freshman Katherine Redden (Fort Thomas, Ky.) recorded a fifth place finish clocking in at 10:47.11.
Next, Zimcosky won the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:52.60 mark. Barker finished next for the âCats touching the wall in 1:54.85 with sophomore Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) on her tail with a 1:55.82 time to place third.
Dawson recorded a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.84. Raley was the next scorer for Ohio placing fourth with a 59.21 time.
The net event was the 100-yard breaststroke where Mikesell won with a time of 1:04.58. Sophomore Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.) finished next with a 1:05.85 time to place second. Lahtinen and Hannah Shinn (Waterloo, Ill.) secured the fourth and fifth place spots clocking in at 1:06.04 and 1:06.25.
Ohio stole the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly with freshman Annie Gosselin (Naperville, Ill.) in first (2:06.28), junior Elena Patz (Waunakee Wis.) in second (2:07.12) and Dukes in third (2:09.08).
Van Lanen and Hornstra placed first and second in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 23.57 and 24.28. In the 100-yard freestyle, Van Lanen took first finishing in 51.72.
Dawson won the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:03.56 time. In the next event, the 200-yard breaststroke, Hornstra placed first with a 2:21.24 time.
Zimcosky placed first in the 500-yard freestyle clocking in at 5:02.69.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Ohioâs Dukes placed first touching the wall in 57.42.
Gosselin placed third in the 400 IM with a 4:36.09 time.
In the final event of the afternoon, Ohio won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a team of Zimcosky, Mikesell, Hornstra and Van Lanen with a time of 3:30.96.
UP NEXT
Ohio will face Mid-American Conference opponent, Toledo next Saturday, Jan. 28 at home. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. and graduating seniors, Myriah Ariza-Balter, Josie Barker, Laura Dawson and Carrie Dukes will be recognized beforehand at 1:40.
