OXFORD, Ohio â€" The Ohio women’s softball team (28-20, 9-8 MAC) split a doubleheader with Miami (26-19, 11-5 MAC) on Saturday (April 23) in Oxford, Ohio, winning the season series against the RedHawks, two games to one. The Bobcats took the first game of the doubleheader by the final of 2-1 and fell to the RedHawks in the second game by the final score of 2-1.
“I was extremely proud of my pitching staff for holding down the top offensive team in the conference,†head coach Jodi Hermanek said. “I was proud of the way Danielle and Savvy pitched today. I was also extremely proud of our offense for coming up and being able to out-hit the top offensive team in the conference.â€
GAME ONE
The Bobcats threatened in the top of the second inning when starting pitcher Danielle Stiene (Loveland, Ohio) doubled and then MacKenzie Brunswick (Bellefontaine, Ohio) singled and advanced the second on the throw, placing runners at second and third. However, Ohio would be unable to push a run across.
Miami would break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Michaela Schlattman would single home Hailey Reed to put the RedHawks up 1-0.
The Bobcats wouldn’t waste any time erasing that lead, when leadoff batter Stiene would crush the second pitch of her at bat to straight away center, tying the game. Brunswick would then double and advance to third when Taylor Saxton (Circleville, Ohio) reached first on a dropped third strike. Saxton would then steal her second base of the game, but the Bobcats would not be able to push the go-ahead run across, and the game would remain tied at 1-1.
The Bobcats took the lead in the top of the sixth inning when with one out, Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) reached first after being hit by a pitch. Then Jamie Wren (Whittier, Ohio) crushed a double to the rightfield wall, allowing Cooper to score from first and giving Ohio the 2-1 lead.
Miami would try to rally against reliever Savannah Jo Dorsey (Grove Coty, Ohio) in the bottom of the seventh and with two outs the RedHawks would get a runner on second, but Dorsey would get the final batter to fly out to centerfield and Ohio would take game one by the final of 2-1.
In the circle, Stiene would get the start, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out six. Dorsey would enter the game in relief and pitch 3.1 innings, and allow no runs on two hits and strike out five.
At the plate, Ohio had seven hits with Stiene going 2-for-3 with a homerun, a double and an RBI. Brunswick was also 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Saxton and Deanna Cole (Akron, Ohio) both registered a single and Wren had a double and an RBI.
GAME TWO
The Bobcats got runners moving in the top of the second inning when Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) walked to lead off the inning and then advanced to second when Stiene singled. Runners advanced to second and third on sacrifice bunt by Cooper, however Miami would get out of the inning without allowing Ohio to score.
The RedHawks got the first run on the board in the bottom of the third when the lead off batter, Jenna Jones reached on an error. She advanced to second when Schlattman reach on an error and then would score on a base hit by Taylor Shuey, giving Miami a 1-0 lead.
Miami would threaten to add on in the bottom of the fifth when the RedHawkes loaded the bases with one out. Stiene would enter the game in relieve of starter Dorsey, and get a batter to strike out looking and then get the last batter to ground out to second, keeping the game at 1-0.
Ohio would take advantage and tie the game in the top of the sixth inning when Cooper would walk with one out and then score on an RBI double by Wren, tying the game at 1-1.
Miami would take advantage of another Bobcat miscue in the bottom of the sixth inning, when with two outs and a runner on third, the Bobcat shortstop would drop a popup, allowing Lauren Anderson to score from third, giving Miami a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats would be unable to get any offense going in the top of the seventh, and the RedHawkes would take the second game by the final of 2-1.
At the plate, Ohio had five hits led by Saxton who had two. Wren went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Stiene also had a hit for Ohio.
In the circle, Dorsey got the start, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing and unearned run on three hits and striking out six. Stiene pitched .2 innings, allowing an unearned run on no hits.
The Bobcats will return to action on April 29-30 when Ohio hosts Buffalo for the final home series of the season. The Bobcats will take on the Bulls at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 29 and will take on Buffalo in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. Saturday’s game will serve as the Bobcats’ senior day.
