Dorsey One Hits Indiana; Strikes Out 16 in Shutout

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.
â€" Redshirt junior pitcher Savannah Jo Dorsey struck out a career-high 16 batters on her way to one hitting Indiana, as Ohio would defeat the Hoosiers, 6-0, Saturday at the first day of the Indiana Classic. Earlier in the day, the Bobcats would fall to Drake, 5-4, in nine innings.

AGAINST INDIANA
In the second game of the day against Indiana, the Bobcats jumped out to a fast start against the Hoosiers. The inning began when Taylor Saxton (Circleville, Ohio) and Deanna Cole (Akron Ohio) both reached on infield singles. Saxton would then score on Mikayla Cooper’s (Delaware, Ohio) fielder’s choice. Later in the inning, Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) would score on an infield hit by Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas), putting Ohio up 2-0.

After four innings of scoreless softball, the Bobcats blew the game open in the top of the sixth inning. The inning began when Walker led it off with a base hit. Later in the inning she would score on a Michaela Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio) bunt that died in front of the plate. Then, two batters later with the bases juiced, Hutchinson would crush a double off the centerfield wall, scoring Michaela Dorsey, Saxton and Cole, giving Ohio the 6-0 lead.

After the big sixth inning from Ohio, Savannah Jo Dorsey (Grove City, Ohio) struck out five of the last eight batters she faced, and the Bobcats would come away with the 6-0 victory.

In the circle, Savannah Jo Dorsey was unstoppable, allowing on runs on one hit and striking out a career-high 16 batters while picking up her fifth win on the season.

At the plate, the Bobcats strung together 11 hits, led by Walker who was 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Cole added three hits and Hutchinson had two hits with four RBIs. Saxton and Michaela Dorsey each added one hit to the score sheet.

AGAINST DRAKE
In the first game of the day against Drake, the Bobcats opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Amanda Dalton (Salem, Va.) walked which brought Michaela Dorsey to the plate where she roped a double to right center, allowing Dalton to score, putting Ohio up 1-0.

Ohio added on to the score in the top of the third inning when leadoff batter, Hutchinson opened the frame with a double off the centerfield wall. Next, Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hutchinson to third, who would later score off of a Cooper sacrifice fly, giving the Bobcats the 2-0 lead.

Drake would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Kelsey Wright opened the frame with a double to leftfield, she would then score on a double by Megan Sowa. Drake would tie the game two batters later when Taryn Pena singled through the left side, scoring Sowa. Then, with the bases loaded, starting pitcher Danielle Stiene (Loveland, Ohio) would get Tasha Alexander swinging to end the frame with the score tied at 2-2.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Wright would score on a base hit by Sowa, putting Drake up 3-2.

Ohio evened the score up in the top of the sixth inning when Cooper hit a leadoff homerun, her third of the season, to straight away centerfield to tie the game up at 3-3.

After a scoreless seventh inning from both sides, the game went into extras, with the Bobcats striking first in the top of the eighth when MacKenzie Brunswick (Bellefontain, Ohio) scored when Natalie Alvarez (Long Beach, Calif.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, putting Ohio up 4-3.

Drake would respond in the bottom of the frame when Pena scored on a sacrifice fly to rightfield by Alexander, tying the game at 4-4. After a scoreless frame by the Bobcats in the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs would then walk off at the bottom of the inning on a base hit by Sowa to give drake the 5-4 win.

At the plate, the Bobcats had 11 hits with Saxton, Cole and Dalton each with two. Copper recorded one hit, a homerun, and two RBIs, while Brunswick, Hutchinson, Walker and Michaela Dorsey all had one hit.

In the circle, Stiene got the start, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts. Morgan Geno (Chillicothe, Ohio) pitched 1.2 innings and did not allow a run on two hits, while Savannah Jo Dorsey pitched 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four.

UP NEXT
The Bobcats wrap up play at the Indiana Classic on Sunday, March 13 when Ohio takes on Evansville at 10 a.m., and then concludes the weekend against Drake at 2:30 pm.
