GRANVILLE, Ohio- With the help of nine first-place finishes, the Ohio women’s swimming and diving team opened up its 2016 portion of its schedule on Friday, defeating Denison 161-139.
“I knew Denison was going to be tough competition today and they were,†head coach Rachel Komisarz-Baugh said. “We are always happy with the win, but this meet showed us that we have a lot of work to do over the next couple of weeks. We plan on getting right back into the pool tomorrow to get some work done.â€
The meet opened with the 200-yard medley relay, where the Ohio ‘A’ team of Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio), Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.), Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Eng.) and Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) finished is second place, touching in with a final time of 1:45.51.
In the next event, the 1,000-yard freestyle, Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.) finished in second place with a final time of 10:32.16, while teammate Bianca Hauzer (Bedfordview, South Africa) finished in third place with a time of 10:36.87.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Dawson took the top spot, finishing the race in 1:51.30 and Josie Barker (Richmond, N.Yorkshire, Eng.) finished in third place with a final time of 1:54.45.
In the fourth event of the evening, the 100-yard backstroke, Ferguson finished in first place, touching in at 56.77. Haley Clark (College Station, Texas) finished in third place with a final time of 58.26, and Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.) finished fourth in 58.38.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Hornstra finished in third place with a final time of 1:07.60. The next event, the 200-yard butterfly, Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.) finished first with a final time of 2:04.12 and Maddie Wyke (Columbus, Ind.) finished in third place, touching in at 2:08.49.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Van Lanen sprinted to a first-place finish, touching in with a final time of 23.45. In the 100-yard freestyle, Van Lanen once again took the top spot, finishing the race in 51.62. Clark finished in third place, touching in at 53.02.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Dawson finished in first place, touching in at 2:01.85 and setting a new pool record. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Hornstra placed third with a final time of 2:26.37.
In the next event, the 500-yard freestyle, Henderson and Hauzer once again finished in second and third places, respectively. Henderson finished the race in 5:09.32 and Hauzer finished in 5:09.53.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) finished in first place, touching in at 56.64, followed by Ferguson who finished in second with a final time of 57.31.
In the 400-yard IM, Stephanie Gyurke (Bellevue, Ohio) finished in second place, touching in at 4:33.80. Patz finished in third place, finishing the race in 4:36.35.
The final event of the night was the 200-yard freestyle relay where the Ohio ‘A’ team of Clark, Barker, Dawson and Van Lanen finished in second place with a final time of 1:36.00.
In diving, Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) continued her dominance, finishing the 1-meter event in first place, with a final score of 308.48. Karrisa Conner (Granite Bay, Calif.) finished the 1-meter dive in second place with a final score of 217.05. In the 3-meter event, Bartlett once again finished in first place with a final score of 345.83 and set a new pool record. Conner placed third with a final score of 194.93.
The Bobcats return to action on Jan. 22 when they head to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a double dual against Duquesne and Xavier. The meet is set to being at 5 p.m.
