BUFFALO, N.Y. â€" The Ohio wrestling team continued its three-match winning streak with a 31-7 win at Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo on Sunday.
“This was a nice win on the road,†said head coach Joel Greenlee. “We wrestled hard up and down the lineup. We really have some guys that are stepping up and wrestling well.â€
125-pound freshman Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) got things going for the Bobcats, picking up Ohio’s first win of the competition 6-4 over Buffalo’s Kyle Akins. Laney landed takedowns in the first period and a takedown and an escape in the second while dominating riding time throughout the match.
Freshman 133-pounder Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) pinned Buffalo’s Bryan Lantry at the 1:02 mark of the of the opening frame.
Redshirt sophomore 141-pound wrestler Noah Forrider (Marysville, Ohio) picked up a 2-1 decision win over Brandon Lapi. An escape in the second frame and dominating the riding time gave Forrider the victory.
At 157-pounds, redshirt senior Spartak Chino (Wheaton, Ill.) picked up a decision over Tim Schaefer 9-4. Chino scored a takedown in the first and second and two in the third to cruise to victory over Schaefer. Chino’s win was the start of the ‘Cats winning five straight matches to close out the dual.
Redshirt freshman Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) picked up a fall over Tyler Rill at the 4:$2 mark of the second period. After a stalemate in the first, Reese landed a near fall in the second before landing the pin.
At 174, redshirt senior Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) picked up a decision over Muhamed McBryde, 5-2. Entering the third down 2-1, Walters landed an escape and a takedown and notched his final point on riding time.
Redshirt senior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) picked up a close 2-1 decision over Joe Ariola. The match was tied at the end 1-1, but Romanchik won on riding time.
Redshirt senior Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) put an exclamation mark on the match picking up a 12-4 major decision in the 197-pound match. Wellington landed two takedowns in the first, one in the second along with a reversal and hit another takedown in the third to cruise to victory.
The ‘Cats return to action on Jan. 31 traveling to Northern Iowa for a showdown with the Panthers. The match is set for a 2 p.m. ET start.
