Perrine, Lehman’s Seasons Conclude at Day Two of NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND—The Ohio Bobcats wrestling team wrapped up day two of competition at the NCAA Championships on Friday (Mar. 20). Redshirt seniors Sal Perrine (Northfield, Ohio) and Zayne Lehman (Akron, Ohio) each won their second round consolation matches, but fell in the consolation third round, bringing their seasons to an end.

Session III

At 184 lbs, Sal Perrine took the mat looking to bounce back from a defeat on Thursday night, taking on 32nd seeded Caleb Uhlenopp of Utah Valley. Perrine got ahead early with a takedown, and successfully fended off a single leg from Uhlenhopp to keep a 3-1 lead after three minutes. Starting the second period on bottom, Perrine recorded an escape before battling with Uhlenopp for the rest of the period, entering the third period holding a 4-1 lead. Despite Uhlenopp adding an escape point at the beginning of the third period, Perrine held strong to clinch the 4-2 decision victory.

Perrine's bounce back earned him a match with 10th seeded Caleb Campos of American, with a trip to the "blood round" on the line. Campos took a shot early in the first that Perrine successfully got out of, and continued to battle, taking a shot that he could not convert. The score was locked at 0-0 after three minutes. Perrine chose bottom to start the second period, and after a prolonged battle was able to escape to score the first point of the match. Campos eventually proved to be too much, recording a nearfall and takedown in the second period that would be the difference in the match. Perrine would lose by 9-2 decision, concluding his season.

At 197 lbs, Zayne Lehman took the mat looking to get back on track after a loss in the second round, battling fourth seeded Sonny Sasso of Virginia Tech. The two felt each other out for most of the first period, as Lehman attempted takedowns twice that he could not convert. Lehman was able to fend off a single leg from Sasso, maintaining his balance to keep the match scoreless after three minutes. Starting on top, Lehman allowed Sasso to escape, before battling and eventually getting Sasso to the ground for three points, taking a 3-1 lead. With the score 3-2 after five minutes, Lehman elected to start the third period neutral. Lehman took a shot at Sasso and held on for the final minute to secure the upset victory by 3-2 decision.

Lehman's win earned him a bout with the 12th seed, Luke Geog of Ohio State. After giving up a first period takedown, Lehman was able to escape to earn a point. Starting the second period on bottom, Lehman quickly escaped to bring the match within a point. Staring down a 6-3 deficit entering the third period, Lehman got an escape point, but could not convert a takedown, dropping the match by 6-3 decision and bringing his season to a close.
