THE BASICS
The Ohio baseball team (22-15, 8-7 MAC) fell to Mid-American Conference East Division rival Kent State, 9-2, on Sunday (April 19) in the weekend series finale at Olga A. Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.
The Bobcats clinched the weekend series over the Golden Flashes by way of a 7-5 come-from-behind win in the series opener on Friday (April 17) and an 11-4 romp on Saturday (April 18). Ohio took a series from Kent State for the first time since 1998.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Jake Madsen (Cincinnati, Ohio), redshirt junior Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Ty Black (Waynesville, Ohio) all produced multi-hit efforts for the Bobcats, with Madsen driving in a run and Black scoring a run.
- Sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio) was saddled with the pitching loss for Ohio, falling to 2-4 on the season. He gave up five earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three over five frames.
- Redshirt senior southpaw reliever Evan Geist (Roswell, Ga.) threw a scoreless inning, fanning one while walking two.
- The Golden Flashes were led at the plate by freshman Tim DalPorto, who went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
- Redshirt sophomore Curtis Olvey finished 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for Kent State.
- Freshman Dylan Rosa doubled and singled and drove in a run and scored another for the Flashes.
- Sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Andy Ravel went 6.1 innings on the mound for Kent State, giving up two runs -- one of which was earned -- on eight hits and a walk. He fanned one to earn the win and improve to 6-1 on the year.
- Sophomore Jared Skolnicki tossed 2.2 scoreless frames for the Golden Flashes, striking out two while walking one.
- Kent State opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on a leadoff home run over the left field wall by senior Tommy Monnot -- his fifth round tripper of the season.
- Ohio knotted the contest at one-all in the top of the third on a leadoff hit and a two-out defensive miscue by Kent State. Ty Black led off the frame with a base hit through the left side, then advanced to second on a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt by freshman Tony Giannini (Carmel, Ind.). Ty Black scored one out later on a throwing error at third by Olvey that allowed redshirt senior Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio) to chug into second.
- The Bobcats manufactured a run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Manny DeJesus (Caguas, P.R.) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Black, moved to third on a ground out to second by Longo and scored on a two-out single through the left side by Madsen.
- The Golden Flashes evened the score in the home half of the fifth as Olvey led off with a double to left and scored on a double down the right field line by DalPorto.
- Kent State broke the contest open with a four-run bottom of the sixth. The frame opened with junior Zarley Zalewski drawing a walk and Monnot being hit by a pitch. A single through the left side by sophomore Conner Simonetti plated Zalewski to give Kent State a 3-2 lead. Monnot and Simonetti each advanced 90 feet on a fly out to right by senior Jeff Revesz, and, after Olvey was hit by a pitch, DalPorto singled up the middle to score both Monnot and Simonetti. A two-out double down the left field line by Rosa brought home Olvey and made it a 6-2 affair.
- The Flashes tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh as Zalewski drew a leadoff walk, took second on a balk, moved to third on a ground out to short by Monnot and scored one out later on a double to left by Revesz. Olvey then scored Revesz with a base hit to right center to plate Revesz and increase Kent State's lead to 8-2.
- Kent State added a final run in the bottom of the eighth. Rosa hit a leadoff double to left, advanced to second when senior Sawyer Polen was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double steal. After Zalewski coaxed a walk to load the bases, Monnot drew a walk to bump home Rosa.
