NASHVILLE, Tenn. ÂÂ- A five-run fifth inning by the Ohio baseball team (9-4) propelled the Bobcats to an 8-4 victory against The University of Illinois Chicago, solidifying the series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn.
Ohio was first on the board, with an RBI single by Mitch Longo (Mayfield, Ohio) sending Manny De Jesus (Caguas, Puerto Rico) across the plate.
A five-run fifth inning followed for the Bobcats, beginning with an RBI-double by John Adryan (Delran, N.J.). An RBI-single by Nate Squires (Plain City, Ohio) followed, bringing Adryan full circle. Garrett Black (Lima, Ohio) sent in the next Ohio run, before the IUC pitching staff walked two Bobcats in to score.
Following sacrifice fly by Garrett Black in the sixth, UIC tacked their first run on the board with a sacrifice fly to right field.
A lone RBI by Cody Gaertner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) extended Ohio's lead in the ninth, sending Garrett Black home. The Flames responded with a two-RBI single in the ninth and an RBI single to center field, but could not catch up to Ohio's early advantage.
Ohio Starting Pitcher Evan Geist (Roswell, GA) picked up the win in the outing, improving his record to 2-1. In his five innings on the bump, Geist struck out six, walked seven, and allowed just three hits and one earned run.
UIC starter Trevor Lane was charged with the loss, allowing eight hits, six earned runs and striking out three Bobcat batters.
Garrett Black went 2-for-3 on the day and accounted for two RBI and two runs. Longo and Squires both were 2-for-4 on the day and accounted for one RBI and two runs apiece. De Jesus also posted a multi-hit day, going 2-for-5.
The Ohio baseball team will travel to Morehead Ky. to take on Morehead State in a lone game on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.
