The Ohio softball team (3-3) split the first day of the First Pitch Classic hosted by UNC Charlotte. In game one the Bobcats defeated Quinnipiac 9-1 in five innings and fell to host Charlotte in game two 15-2 in five innings.

In game one against Quinnipiac (0-1), the Bobcats struck early, going up 2-0 in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI double to right center by Casie Hutchinson (Lebanon, Ohio) that scored Mikayla Cooper (Delaware, Ohio) and Sloan Walker (Cypress, Texas).


Ohio added on in the bottom of the third when Walker scored on a sacrifice bunt by Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.). The next batter, Hutchinson singled to left field scoring Cooper and giving the Bobcats a 4-0 lead.

Quinnipiac scored a run on the top of the fourth inning when Dani Edmands hit a solo homerun to rightfield to cut the score to 4-1.

The Bobcats went up 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Leanna Bachman (Carroll, Ohio) scored on an RBI triple to left field by Hutchinson.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bobcats put the finishing touches on the game when with her third hit of the game, Hutchinson hit a two RBI single to left center, scoring Cooper and Sam Bowlsbey (Farmingdale, N.J.). The final two runs of the game were scored on a two RBI double to left center by Dakota Pyles (Galloway, Ohio), scoring Raven King (Alpine, Utah) and Hutchinson and giving the Bobcats the 9-1 five-inning victory.

At the plate, the Bobcats had eight hits. Hutchinson led the Bobcats going 3-for-3 with a triple and five runs batted in. Pyles went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs.

In the circle, Bachman pitched four innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out two. Lauren McClary (Pasadena, Texas) pitched one inning and did not allow a hit and struck out one.

On game two against Charlotte (2-1), the Bobcats fell behind early, with the 49ers going up 13-0 after two innings.

In the top of the third, the Bobcats finally got on the board when Pyles hit a two-run homerun to leftfield, scoring Adrienne Gebele (Annapolis, M.D.) from first. However, that was all the runs Ohio would score and would fall 15-2 in five innings.

Offensively, The Bobcats had five hits. Walker led the squad going 2-for-3 at the plate and Pyles went 1-for-2 with a homerun and two RBIs.

In the circle, Kaylin Clarke (North Royalton, Ohio) started the game, allowing five runs on five hits. McClary pitched 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on three hits. Bachman went two thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on five hits. Sydney Compston (Wellston, Ohio), who allowed two runs on five hits, pitched the final two innings.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, Feb 14 in the second day of the First Pitch Classic hosted by UNC Charlotte. The Bobcats will face Army at 10 a.m. and Quinnipiac at 4 p.m.
