Short Story: The Ohio volleyball team (25-8) hit a game-high .306 but dropped a 3-1 decision in the opening round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament to host No. 13 Brigham Young (27-3).
THE BASICS
• The Bobcats outhit and out blocked the No. 13-ranked Cougars including 15-11, but dropped a 3-1 decision winning the first set 25-19, but dropping the following sets 23-25, 17-25 and 24-26, respectively.
• Junior outside hitter Mallory Salis (Oak Lawn, Ill.) led Ohio with 21 kills, nine digs and two block assists.
• Sophomore outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) recorded 15 kills and two block assists.
• Senior setter Abby Gilleland (Bull Valley, Ill.) had nine kills, 53 assists and seven digs, she also had one solo block and a block assist.
• Senior middle blocker Karin Bull (Bloomington, Minn.) had eight kills, two digs and six block assists.
• Freshman libero Erica Walker (Wheaton, Ill.) had nine digs in the outing.
• Senior middle blocker Shelby Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) had four kills, a dig and a block assist.
• Senior libero Meredith Ashy (Louisville, Ky.) had 20 digs int he contest.
• Sophomore middle blocker Ali Lake (Liberty Township, Ohio) had seven kills and two block assists in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Ohio got behind in the first set by two-points but hit at a .571 clip to take a 25-19 win in the opening set.
• Salis had seven kills in the opening set while Bull had three blocks.
• As a team, Ohio had 20 kills in the opening set.
• After keeping it close in the ten points, BYU went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-10 advantage, the Bobcats came out of a timeout with a 4-0 run which cut the BYU lead to 15-14.
• BYU hit .250 in the second set to take a 25-23 win over Ohio. The Bobcats hit .262 in the second set and had two service errors while BYU had three service aces.
• In the third set, BYU picked up three service aces, while Ohio had three serving errors. The Cougars took the third set, 25-17.
• Salis had 16 attacks in the third set, with three kills.
• In the fourth set, Ohio went toe-to-toe with BYU and held the set within two points, taking its larges lead of the set, 15-12 on a attacking error by BYU’s Alexa Gray.
• Ohio tied the score at 22, 23 and 24 points before BYU closed it out with a kill by Lacy Haddock and an attack error by Salis.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
• Bull had six block assists, which was the 10th time this season she has recorded five or more.
• Gilleland has posted double-digit assists 33 times this season and 122 times in her career.
• Ashy has recorded double-digit digs 29 times in 2015 and 113 times in her career.
• Ohio went 1-1 against ranked opponents this season.
• Ohio is now 5-10 in the NCAA Tournament
