Short Story: Ohio volleyball (14-3, 4-0) swept Eastern Michigan (9-8, 1-3) in a tough three set bought (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) on Saturday (Oct. 3) to sweep their weekend opponents.
THE BASICS
- The Bobcats were led by redshirt freshman Katie Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) with 10 kills, four block assists and a .474 clip.
- Senior middle blocker Shelby Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) each had nine kills. Kosiorek contributed with three block assists and three digs, while Walker had six digs.
- Reigning Mid-American Conference Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week and senior setter Abby Gilleland (Bull Valley, Ill.) had a team-high 34 assists along with 10 digs and a tied team-high two aces.
- Senior libero Meredith Ashy (Louisville, Ky.) compiled a match-high 19 digs along with a tied team-high two aces.
- Junior outside hitter/libero Mallory Salis (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and freshman libero Erica Walker (Wheaton, Ill.) each had seven digs.
- Redshirt junior Aubree Hord (Loveland, Ohio) finished with a tied team-high two aces.
- Redshirt sophomore Ali Lake (Liberty Township, Ohio) totaled five kills and three block assists.
- Eastern Michigan freshman Cassie Haut led the Eagles with a match-high 12 kills. Senior Corynne Smith totaled a team-high 16 digs. Redshirt freshman Mallory Rejewski finished with a match-high 35 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ohio got off to a 10-5 run to start the match. The Bobcats saw early production from Nelson, who recorded four kills during this run. Eastern Michigan sparked a 5-1 run after their own timeout to cut Ohio’s lead to 11-10, but two EMU errors and a kill from Shelby Walker allowed the Bobcats to gain a 14-11 lead. The Eagles called a timeout trailing Ohio 22-19, but two kills from Shelby Walker and Gilleland and an EMU error helped the ‘Cats take the first set 25-21.
- Down 7-5 in the second set, Ohio took the next two points thanks to successes from Lake and Nelson. Though the Bobcats fell behind on the next point, the ‘Cats got two kills from Lake and successful attacks from Nelson and Shelby Walker to rally off the next five points to take a 12-8 lead. Eastern Michigan’s timeout was effective, as the Eagles hopped on a 7-1 run to get a 16-13 edge on the Bobcats. Six of the set’s 10 ties came after this point, where the intensity started to brew. Ohio grabbed a 21-19 lead because of two EMU attack errors, but three consecutive kills from the Eagles gave them back the lead 22-21. After their own timeout, the Bobcats got two huge kills from Nelson and Kosiorek and an ace from Salis to win the set 25-23.
- The third set saw Ohio take an early 8-5 lead, until EMU grabbed three successes and jumped on a 5-2 run to tie the set at 10. Trading points back and forth, Eastern Michigan and Ohio tied four times until the Bobcats broke it open. Tied at 17, two EMU errors and a kill from Bull gave Ohio a 20-17 lead. The ‘Cats forced three Eagle attack errors, and grabbed kills from Salis and Lake to take the third set 25-19.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Ohio starts MAC play 4-0 for the third consecutive season and fifth time in the last seven years.
- The ‘Cats have now won nine of their last 10, including seven consecutive matches and 28 straight regular season conference matches.
- The Bobcats now hold a 35-15 all-time record against EMU.
- For the first time in her career, Nelson reached double-digit kills.
- Gilleland achieved her ninth double-double of the 2015 campaign and 34th of her career. She posted double-digit assists for the 109th time in her career and 17th time this season. She recorded double-digit digs for the 39th time in her career and tenth time this season.
- Ashy compiled double-digit digs for the 15th time this season and 99th in her career.

“We’re thankful to get another conference road win tonight. I wasn’t pleased with our defense, but we were good enough offensively to earn the win.
