Short Story: Ohio volleyball (13-3, 3-0) swept Kent State (7-8, 1-2) at the MAC Center (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) on Thursday (Oct. 1) to win their 27th consecutive MAC regular season match.
THE BASICS
- In her return to Northeast Ohio, sophomore outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) led the Bobcats with nine kills and hit .375 for the match. Kosiorek also had a match high two aces along with nine digs.
- Reigning Mid-American Conference Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week Abby Gilleland (Bull Valley, Ill.) grabbed a double-double by tallying 33 assists and 16 digs along with an ace.
- Senior libero Meredith Ashy (Louisville, Ky.) compiled a team-high 17 digs for the match.
- Redshirt freshman Katie Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) totaled seven kills and a match-high four total blocks (two solo). Nelson hit .375 for the match.
- Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Ali Lake (Liberty Township, Ohio) finished with six kills and a .429 clip.
- Senior middle blocker Shelby Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) had six kills and two total blocks (one solo) in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Battling from behind to start the first set, Ohio took their first lead of the match 9-8 thanks to kills from Nelson and Kosiorek. Kent State was quick to battle back and regained the lead 10-9, but back-to-back kills from Nelson and Kosiorek again gave Ohio an 11-10 edge. Coming out of a Golden Flashes timeout, Ohio kicked it up a notch. A 6-1 run highlighted by kills from Bull, Salis and Gilleland along with an ace from Kosiorek forced another Kent State timeout. Leading 17-12 in the first set, Ohio put together an 8-4 run to claim the opening set 25-16.
- The second set saw both teams battle for the lead back and forth. Tied at ten, Ohio took advantage of KSU attack errors and got kills from Kosiorek, Lake, and Bull. The Green and White maintained their lead late in the set, and called a timeout with a 21-17 lead. Back-to-back kills by Shelby Walker and Nelson gave Ohio their largest lead of the set 23-17. Two consecutive kills by Gilleland and Kosiorek gave the Bobcats the second set 25-19.
- The Green and White jumped on Kent State early in the third set 9-6 to start. At this point, Kent State had four attack errors in the set compared to Ohio’s two. The Golden Flashes soon committed four straight attack errors to help the Bobcats put on a 6-4 runand an Ohio 20-15 lead. The 'Cats finished the set 25-18 with kills from Lake, Kosiorek and Bull to claim the match.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Ohio has now won 27 consecutive MAC regular season matches.
- The Bobcats have started MAC play 3-0 in three of the last four seasons.
- Gilleland achieved her eigth double-double of the season and 33rd of her career. She recorded double-digit digs for the 37th time in her career and ninth time this season.
- Ashy compiled double-digit digs for the 14th time this season and 98th time in her career.
