ATHENS, Ohio â€" The Ohio wrestling team (5-5, 2-3 MAC) earned its second-consecutive Mid-American Conference win against Northern Illinois on Friday evening at the NIU Convocation Center.
Beginning at the 141-class, the Bobcats and Huskies traded bouts to maintain a close margin.
No. 8 Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio) stole the lead for Ohio, pinning NIU’s Trace Engelkes in 4:31 at the 174-class. This marks the redshirt junior’s 17th consecutive win, improving his team-high record to 23-1 to remain undefeated in MAC competition.
Redshirt junior Andrew Romanchik (Independence, Ohio) extended the Ohio lead, posting a 2-0 decision at the 184-class to improve his overall record to 21-9.
A decision by No. 16 Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) followed, marking the redshirt junior’s fifth-consecutive victory and extending his undefeated MAC record.
The Bobcats took the heavyweight class, with Jesse Webb (Bennington, VT) earning a 5-3 decision.
The Huskies responded, posting triumphs at the 125 and 133 classes to close in on the Bobcats, solidifying the match at 21-16, Ohio.
Up Next for the Bobcats
The Bobcats will return to Athens on Sunday, Jan. 25 as they take on Buffalo for their third home match of the season. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
