UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Ohio University women's golf team concluded competition at the Nittany Lion Invitational on Sunday and posted a combined final round score of 308.
After 54 holes of play, the Bobcats finished with a 922 (305-309-308, +58), with the final round 308 score moving the team into a tie for 10th place with Akron.
Kent State showed some #MACtion, shooting an 873 (294-288-291, +9) combine score to the take top honors at the tournament. Jenna Ha led the Golden Flashes to victory shooting an outstanding 212 (70-72-70, -4) to put her in first place of the 93 participating student-athletes.
Yale (877, +13) finished in second place just four strokes shy of Kent State while host Penn State (887, +23) followed in third.
The duo of senior Kristen Helmsdoerfer (Westerville, Ohio) and freshman Hailey Hrynewich (Muskegon, Mich.) led the Bobcats with a 230 (+14), tying them for 31st place. Helmsdoerfer displayed senior leadership through her round-by-round consistency, shooting 76-77-77 in the tournament.
Hrynewich equalized her senior teammate by shooting 72-77-81 in the tournament. The true freshman's first round 72 score marked Ohio's season-best single-round score by a student-athete.
Senior Kara Brinkmann (Middletown, Ohio) showed impressive round-by-round improvement tallying a 236 (86-76-74, +20) to net her 53rd place. Brinkmann's 74 score on Sunday was good for the day's 13th best among the field.
Junior Julie Lechner (Powell, Ohio) shot a 237 (78-79-80, +21) while sophomore Angela Codian (Massillon, Ohio) concluded the tournament with a 239 (79-83-77, +23) combined score. Sophomore Lauren McKinzie (Medina, Ohio) rounded out the `Cats, shooting a 248 (80-84-84, +32) combined score.
The team's 10th place finish marks the Bobcats' best finish in the Nittany Lion Invitational since 2007 when the team also placed 10th.
Ohio will next play in The Preview to be hosted by Ball State in Fishers, Ind., on Oct. 8 and 9.
