Final Stats
ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio (1-1) dropped its first game of the 2012 season with a 6-0 setback at No. 7 Syracuse this afternoon.
"I think we really got an education on what we need to do if we want to take that next step as a program today," Head Coach Neil Macmillan said. "We were in it to start but the scoreline was not flattering at half. We didn't do ourselves any favors by letting them score quickly after halftime either. However, after the timeout I think we moved some pieces around and set some things up that will benefit us down the road."
The teams alternated shots over the first 10 minutes with Luli Gomez Teruel having the first attempt on goal. Syracuse would then turn up the pressure by notching the next five shots and four penalty corners before scoring in the 15th minute. Leonie Geyer, a Preseason All-Big East choice would capitalize off a corner for a 1-0 Orange lead.
Syracuse doubled their lead in the 21st minute when USA U21 National Team member Jordan Page scored on a shot from the right side of the circle. The Orange would score again two minutes from half on a goal from Anna Crumb to make it 3-0.
In the second half, Page crossed a ball to the center and Kelsey Millman deflected it in for a 4-0 Syracuse lead. Gillian Pinder then rebounded a shot that was initially blocked for a 5-0 advantage five minutes into the second stanza.
Ohio’s first try of the second half came in the 48th minute when Cathryn Altdoerffer was denied off a Jessica Jue penalty corner. The ‘Cats got another penalty corner two minutes later but were unable to capitalize. Despite those efforts, Pinder would score her second goal of the game to make the score 6-0 with 10 minutes to play.
Taylor Brown, coming off a two-goal, one-assist performance on Friday, registered her only shot on goal with eight minutes remaining. Overall, Syracuse out-shot Ohio 27-4. Goalkeeper Brittany Walker had a career-best 13 saves for the Green & White.
Ohio opens up its home slate next Saturday at 1 p.m. with a contest against Radford.
