Ohio Field Hockey Falls to Longwood

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio field hockey team (5-10, 3-4 MAC) fell to Longwood (4-10, 2-5 MAC) on a rainy Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1.

As a team, the Bobcats had 24 shots with 14 on goal, and nine penalty corners. The Lancers recorded three shots, all of which were on goal, and recorded one corner.

Individually, freshman Tiana Nhamoinesu (Thirsk, North Yorkshire) again led the Bobcats, scoring the team's first and only goal of the game. In addition to the goal, Nhamoinesu attempted seven shots, five of which were on goal. Sophomore Deborah James (Hertfordshire, England) followed with five shots, two on goal.

Ohio opened the game with two early scoring chances, as junior Emily Beitzel (Hershey, Pa.) and senior Sasha Dikotla (Johannesburg, South Africa) each recorded shots on goal in the opening minutes of the game. Longwood responded with chances of their own later in the period, but were unable to convert as the Ohio defense stood tall. As the first half came to a close, the Lancers were awarded a penalty corner and converted off a deflection, taking a 1-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.

The Bobcats controlled the game throughout the second quarter, dominating time of possession while recording nine shots and not allowing one. The Bobcats put two shots on net early in the period but could not convert until Nhamoinesu found the back of the net on an offensive rush. This marked her fourth goal of the season, tying her with Dikotla for the team lead. The Bobcats would have chances to score on two more penalty corners before the half, but were not able to convert on either as the game went to halftime tied 1-1.

Ohio again controlled the third quarter, recording five shots and not allowing one while generating multiple scoring chances. The Bobcats sustained the offensive pressure despite playing down a player for four minutes due to two green cards given in the period.

Capitalizing on a yellow card issued to the Bobcats at the end of the third period, Longwood put pressure on the Bobcat defense and scored 50 seconds into the fourth quarter, putting Ohio at a 2-1 deficit with just under 15 minutes to play. The Bobcats responded by create multiple scoring chances in the period, as they were awarded three penalty corners and put four shots on net. None of those shots found the back of the net, however, as the Bobcats fell by a score of 2-1.

The Bobcats will return to action on Friday, October 24 when they take on Miami (OH) at Pruitt Field. First touch is set for 3 p.m. and is available for streaming on ESPN+.
