Final Stats
Lexington, Ky. - Ohio Volleyball suffered its second defeat of the season, getting swept by Kentucky 25-20, 30-28, 25-14 in the first match of the day at the UK Classic.
No Ohio player had more than six kills and as a team, the 'Cats managed to hit only .036. The normally outstanding blocking presence provided by Ohio's middles was nullified by Kentucky's hitters. In fact, the Wildcats held a 9-6 advantage in total team blocks.
Ohio led 9-8 in the first set but UK scored five of the next six points to claim a 13-10 lead. Ohio cut it to 1 at 16-15 following an attack error by the home side but Kentucky scored three in a row to create the separation it would need to eventually take the set, 25-20. Kelly Lamberti had her best set of the contest with three kills in eight swings.
Ohio started the second set off by taking a 9-5 lead but UK evened things up with a four-point run. The Wildcats would eventually take an 18-15 lead before a kill by Leah Petrovich started an Ohio run that would end with a Lamberti kill and the ‘Cats in front 19-18. Kentucky scored the next four points and would lead 23-20 before another run by the Green & White.
Kills by Lambert, Chelsea Bilger and Lexie Hartnett pushed Ohio back in front 24-23 and the ‘Cats had a chance to even the match at one set apiece. However, Ohio blew five set points and after leading 28-27, allowed three-straight points to UK and fell 30-28. Faith Robins had three kills and hit .500 to lead Ohio in the second set.
Kentucky blistered Ohio to start the third set scoring 16 of the first 18 points, using a 10-run to take a 16-2 lead. The Bobcats’ best stretch came late as they took six of the final eight points but still lost the set, 25-14. Despite recording its lowest point total of the day, Ohio did manage a match-best 3.5 team blocks during the final set.
