Statesboro, Ga. - Katie Post led Ohio with 12 kills and the Bobcats swept the first match of the Bash in the Boro against South Carolina State, 25-23, 25-19, 25-15 this morning.
Post hit .400 for the match (12 kills on 25 attempts) and Faith Robins had eight kills on 15 attempts to help the Bobcats hit .283 for the match, their second-highest mark of the season. Chelsea Bilger chipped in with nine kills, while Mollie Geske led the team with 13 digs. Bailey Karst and Leah Petrovich split setting duties with the freshman leading the way with 15 and the junior adding 13.
"Faith had a nice match and i thought Katie played well," Head Coach Ryan Theis said. "They both capitalized and had good swings on the ball. We're going to need them to continue to play that way if we want to keep improving."
Five Bobcats had three kills in the first set and the balanced attack helped the team overcome an 18-16 deficit. Post and Robins collected kills, Petrovich added an ace and S.C. State committed four attack errors as Ohio went on a seven-point run for a 23-18 lead. A four-point run by the Bulldogs was halted by a kill from Serena Warner and Robins ended the set with another kill for a 25-23 win.
Post was dominant in the second set with six kills on 10 swings and Ohio went on to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 win. With the set tied 12-12, Kelly Colyar ripped off three aces and helped the Green & White gain a 17-12 lead. The Bobcats ran the lead up to nine points on a kill by Petrovich before S.C. State scored four of the final five points for the final outcome.
"Once we solidified ball control we were able to get point runs in games two and three," Theis said. "Kelly Colyar sparked a nice run and again, Katie had a nice match. Once we understood their style of play we were able to pull ahead."
The third set was all even at 14-14 but Ohio turned on the jets and scored 11 of the final 12 points to run away with a 25-15 win for the sweep. Post and Bilger had two kills apiece and combined twice on blocks down the stretch to help the Bobcats cruise to an easy victory. Ohio racked up six of its nine team blocks during the set and limited S.C. State to a -.094 hitting percentage.
The Bobcats play tournament host Georgia Southern tonight at 7 p.m.
