Final Stats
ATHENS, Ohio - Kelly Lamberti notched 20 kills and was named to the Baymont Invitational All-Tournament team but Ohio fell to Virginia in four sets, 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 25-14 this afternoon.
Lamberti's career day capped a weekend which saw her average a double-double with 40 kills and 30 digs over the three matches. She, along with Chelsea Bilger finished with double-doubles against the Cavs as Lamberti finished with 20 and 12 her teammate finished with 12 kills and a team-high 17 digs.
Ohio trailed by five points at 16-11 in the first set before rallying within one at 17-16. UVA led 21-18 before the Bobcats went on another run, getting kills by Lamberti and Bilger, along with an ace from Bilger, to take a 22-21 lead.
Ohio had a chance to take the set when it led 24-22. However, Virginia scored the final points en route to a 26-24 win and a 1-0 lead in the match. Lamberti finished with seven kills as Ohio hit a match-best .304 in the first set.
The Bobcats had a 9-6 lead in the second set before the Cavs took nine of the next 10 points for a 15-10 advantage. After Ohio closed to 16-14, Virginia scored four in a row to push the lead back to six. The margin stayed that way for the remainder of the set as UVA won 25-19 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Ohio climbed back into the match with a third-set victory over the Cavs. The Bobcats trailed early by three sets and the lead continued to go back and forth until the score reached 21-21. A Lamberti kill was followed by a Bilger kill and then an ace by the former made the scoreboard show 24-21 in favor of the Green & White. After Virginia closed to 24-23, Bailey Karst set up Katie Post for the set-winner.
In the fourth set, Virginia put together two critical four-point runs. The first came with the score at 9-7 and provided the Cavaliers with some breathing room. The second run came at 17-11 and essentially put the match to bed as UVA went ahead by 10 points. Virginia hit a match-best .429 to win the set 25-14.
Ohio plays at Pitt on Tuesday night before heading to the Georgia Southern Tournament for four matches on the weekend. On Friday, the 'Cats play South Carolina State and Georgia Southern, and then on Saturday, Ohio squares off against Georgia State and Presbyterian.
