Final Stats
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Ohio Volleyball captured its first win of the season and evened its record at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee with a five-set win over Maryland, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 15-7.
All-MAC preseason selections Katie Post had 15 kills, six blocks and hit .520 while Lexie Hartnett finished with a career-high 13 kills and nine blocks. Kelly Lamberti had another solid outing with her second double-double, registering 16 kills, 11 digs, five blocks and two aces. Bailey Karst led the `Cats with 36 assists and Nicole Staverman, along with Mollie Geske, recorded 18 and 13 digs, respectively. The Bobcats finished with 17.0 total team blocks.
Ohio came out aggressively with four of the first five points in the final set and never trailed. Maryland closed to 9-7 but the Bobcats did not want a repeat of last night, as they scored the final six points. Lamberti and Post got Ohio to the brink of victory before Geske's ace, the team's sixth of the match, ended things. Post would be a part of four blocks in the final set and finished with five of the team's 15 points.
The Bobcats hit .538 in the final set, while Maryland had its first negative attacking percentage of the day. With the win, Ohio improved to 12-6 against opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference and 4-1 against Maryland.
Ohio trailed by as many as four in the first set, falling behind 18-14, but blocks by Hartnett, Robins and Lamberti helped it come back and even things at 18. The Bobcats found themselves in a hole yet again at 22-20, but Post stepped up with two kills and assisted on a block to help erase the deficit. Her second kill sealed the first- set win as Ohio scored the final five points to take the lead in the match.
Post finished with six kills in the set and Hartnett recorded four blocks. Overall, Ohio totaled five team blocks and had a match-high 15 kills while forcing 10 Maryland errors en route to the early lead.
Ohio quickly fell behind 4-0 in the second set but drew even after getting its first ace of the season from Staverman. The biggest lead for the Green & White came at 20-15 but after a Maryland timeout, the Terps cut the Bobcat lead to 22-21. Kills by Lamberti and Hartnett were able to finish things off for the Bobcats as they took a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 win.
After the intermission, Maryland even things with wins in successive sets. In the third set, Lamberti notched five kills and had her best offensive showing of the match, but UM piled up 17 kills and hit .382 to earn a convincing 25-16 win.
In the fourth set, Oho struggled and only managed to hit .089 as Ashleigh Crutcher rattled off five kills and the Terps evened the match with a 25-21 win. Ohio had led 14-13 before its opponents rattled off none of the next 10 points for a commanding 22-15 advantage.
For the match, five Maryland players finished with 10 points or more as Caitlin Adams led the way with 13 kills. Remy McBain notched a triple-double with 10 kills, 11 digs and 38 assists for the Terrapins.
