ATHENS, Ohio - Meryl Weaver is tied for fourth and Ohio Women's Golf is tied for second after the first round of the EKU Lady Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky. After defeating Bowling Green last weekend, the `Cats enjoyed their best start to a tournament so far this spring.
Ohio shot an opening-round 304 (+16) and is even with Arkansas State, nine strokes back of Murray State for the lead. The Bobcats prior best start occurred at the MSU Ocala Spring Tournament when they finished third after one round.
Weaver shot an opening -round 74, sinking two birdies and paring 12 holes to finish at +2. Freshman Kara Brinkmann is +4 and tied for 16th after paring 12 holes for the Bobcats. Megan Weaver and Sarah Tranelli both sit at +5 after paring 11 holes and chipping in two birdies apiece. Erin Cahill is the final Ohio member and closed with a 78 (+6).
Ashley Averitt of Austin Peay is tied with Morgan Cross of Murray State for the individual lead at -2. Jennifer Welch of Arkansas State is along in third at +1 and Weaver is tied with Bailey Arnold of Bowling Green, Alexandra Lennartsson of Murray State and Carley Rhyne of at +2. Overall, 35 players out of the 77-person field are within eight strokes of the lead, including all five Bobcats.
The teams are scheduled to play two 18-hole rounds on Saturday and one round on Sunday. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The course at Arlington has a par of 72 and plays 5,801 yards.
